Fudadin disappointed in missing SA Tests

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - A lot has changed in the life of West Indies Test left-hander Assad Fudadin since his 55 helped the West Indies beat Pakistan to win the 2000 under-15 World Cup and four years later he made 13 in U-19 World Cup final which the West Indies lost by 25 runs to Pakistan.

Back then the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club all-rounder was a dashing batsman who enjoyed playing shots and when he made his First-Class debut for Guyana against Kenya in 2004 he was an aggressive batsman without his beard.

But now he has matured as an individual and cricketer, is married to Akeema, has a six-year-old son. But most noticeable he now sports a flowing beard which he says is to be physically identified as a Muslim.

But he was quick to add that while he wants people know he is a Muslim by his looks it is more important to show the character of someone who is very serious about his Islamic faith.

He is now more focused in his Islam which means ‘a way of life’ and this new focus has not only affected his life in a positive way but also rubbed off on his cricket career. He began growing his beard two ‘Ramadans’ ago in July of 2013 after returning from Bangladesh with the West Indies team the year before.

Born in August 1985 in Berbice, Guyana’s second largest county, Fudadin fulfilled his boyhood dream of playing Test cricket when he made his Test debut in 2012 against England to become one of 17 players from the Ancient County to play at the highest level and the only one to do from Rose Hall Town.

Fudadin, watched by Shiv Chanderpaul, conducts catching practice for a Jaguars’ teammate at the practice session at Providence.

“When I broke my finger while doing fielding drills on the morning of the first Test (Dec 17, 2014) in South Africa, I would have liked to play since I had a chance of doing well against world quality bowlers and secure a permanent place on the West Indies team. I got two screws in my finger and I could remove them after six months but I don’t have to. I would not say I am disappointed because I believe that everything happens for a reason and God is in control of what happens to everyone,” Fudadin explained.

The 29-year-old disclosed that since he has moved closer to Allah he has been able to deal a lot better with disappoint and knowing that everything happens for a reason, helps.

“Even though I was injured I could not get back home for Christmas since the rules of getting a UK Visa was changed a few days after we arrived in South Africa. I had to wait for 15 working days to get back my passport which meant I could not get it until during the final Test. I was with the team all that time in my West Indies clothes, sometimes playing the role of 12th man. I could not grip the weights at the Gym and I ran to stay fit. But I missed playing,” disclosed Fudadin, who has one Test fifty and an average of 30.50.

Fudadin, who said he was not surprised by his selection for the South Africa series because of his good performances with the ‘A’ team, is hoping to return to the Guyana team but is not setting any goals if he plays in the three remaining games.

“While I would like to play against England, right now I am not looking that far ahead. I am taking one step at a time beginning with getting back into the Guyana team.

Session by session, match by match, make runs and stay in the moment and leave it to the selectors,” said Fudadin, who has four centuries and 19 fifties from 75 First-Class matches.

Fudadin batted in an ultra defensive manner in last year’s Regional tournament but pointed out that when Hashim Alma started he was deemed a Test batsman only but he is now one of the most consistent batsmen in all formats.

“If you have a solid technique in Test cricket you don’t have to change that to be successful in the shorter version. What you need to change is your mindset and take a few more risks, find the gaps and face fewer dot balls,” Fudadin opined.

Fudadin bowling off-spin at the Jaguars practice session.

Fudadin disclosed that he supports the Franchise contracts to the 90 players who have not been able to hold down places at the International level and advised them to work hard since he feels you get out what you put in. He also feels it is important to be honest in whatever you do.

Fudadin, who also plays first division cricket for City side GNIC, says while he started as a middle order batsman he is willing to bat anywhere if the team needs him to do so.

He also described what it is like to be a Muslim in the West Indies team adding that he now proudly dresses in a Kurta and tope when he goes to the mosque, which he did in South Africa.

“I am very comfortable being a Muslim in the West Indies team. The players and management made me feel very comfortable and don’t have a problem with me practicing my Islam in the dressing room.

Fudadin explained that when he was doing ‘Salaat’ (praying on mat) those in the team who wanted to understand what he was doing would ask questions and never once did he ever feel discriminated against because of his religion.

A compact batsman who could open the batting, Fudadin says he is eager to return to playing cricket and feels he is fit enough to play, having been selected to face Jamaica.

WICB PCL Regional 4-Day Round 8 bulletin

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Following a break from play last weekend, all six teams should be recharged for the eighth round of matches in the WICB Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament, starting on Friday.

This weekend’s matches start the final month of the tournament and all six teams have a special reason to look forward to the next three weekends.

For front-runners Guyana Jaguars, second-placed Barbados Pride and third-placed Windward Islands Volcanoes, they will be seeking to do all in their power land the title.

In the case Jamaica Franchise, Trinidad & Tobago Red Force and Leeward Islands Hurricanes, they will be looking to finish the season strongly.

In Providence, Guyana: The Jaguars will be looking to put themselves further out of the reach of the Pride and the Volcanoes, when they face Jamaica Franchise at the National Cricket Stadium.

The Jags would have gained a huge boost of confidence going into the break with their stunning victory over the Pride, at the same time, the Franchisers suffered another dent to their season when they fell to the Red Force.

The backdrop to this fixture is that the home team will be looking to land their fifth straight victory, making it more difficult for the title-chasing Pride and Volcanoes to catch them, and the visitors will be seeking to avoid their fourth straight defeat.

On current form, recent history plus home advantage, the Jaguars are hugely favoured, but the Franchisers have reason to believe they could achieve their objective, since they won two years ago when the two sides last played at this venue.

Both sides have made one change to their squad from the previous round, both giving a boost to their batting.

West Indies left-hander Assad Fudadin has recovered from the injury that cut short his Test tour of South Africa last December and will take the place of rookie Shimron Hetmyer.

Chadwick Walton, the West Indies reserve wicketkeeper/batsman on that trip to South Africa, gets his first match of the season with the Franchisers, replacing Horace Miller.

In Basseterre, St. Kitts: The Pride will be looking to take advantage of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, when they meet at Warner Park.

Both sides enter the match low on confidence, after the Pride suffered their first defeat of the season in the previous round and the Hurricanes slumped to their seventh straight loss inside three days.

The objectives are similar for these two teams with the visitors looking for victory and a huge haul of batting and bowling points to keep the pressure on the Jaguars, and the home team seeking to avoid another ignominious defeat.

The Pride have won their last five matches against the Hurricanes – four by an innings – including two years ago at this venue and in the fifth round on home soil

While the Kraigg Brathwaite’s side travelled with an unchanged squad from the previous round, their hosts have brought back Montcin Hodge, Jacques Taylor, Anthony Martin and Hayden Walsh Jr in place of Yannick Leonard, Austin Richards Jr, along with the unrelated Peters, Orlando and Sherwin.

In Couva, Trinidad: The presence of Kieron Pollard could help to make the contest between Red Force and Volcanoes at the National Cricket Centre, the most competitive of the round.

The 27-year-old Pollard will be playing his first match of the season for the Red Force and should add a great deal of substance to their batting, which has been inconsistent this season.

Pollard has scored 1,536 runs at an average of 38.40 in 26 matches for the Red Force. His international experience playing for West Indies in One-day and Twenty20 Internationals, plus in the myriad of T20 leagues around the World will also be brought to bear.

The two sides enter the match on a high, following confident victories inside three days in their previous matches before the break, which broke a spell of four straight losses for the Red Force and gave the Volcanoes their third straight victory.

The home team will be eyeing revenge for their embarrassing loss inside three days when the two sides met in the fifth round in St. Lucia and this is likely to spark the fireworks, as the visiting team seeks their fourth victory over the Red Force out of the last five matches they have played.

Apart from Pollard replacing Shannon Gabriel, promising left-hander Jeremy Solozano has returned from the injury list for the Red Force and fellow left-handed opener Evin Lewis loses out.

Romel Currency and Dalton Polius replaced the sidelined Sunil Ambris and injured Andre Fletcher in the Volcanoes squad, with uncapped Grenadian wicketkeeper/batsman Denis Smith being given a late call after Johnson Charles was flown out to the West Indies squad at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, when injury forced Darren Bravo to return home.

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) recently launched its second division Hand-in-Hand 40-over cricket competition with the aim of fulfilling its mandate of identifying every available talent to take Berbice cricket to the next level.

The knockout competition will start shortly and will feature teams from the West Berbice area.

Speaking at the launch of the competition at the board’s office, Supervisor attached to the New Amsterdam Branch of Hand-in-Hand Insurance Company, Zaleena Ramkishun, said the company was grateful for the opportunity to work with the BCB, adding that “the company recognises the importance of sports and culture to society”.

“The company is pleased to partner with the Board to keep people constructively occupied and live a healthy lifestyle,” Ramkishun said.

She added that the company was also impressed with the work of the BCB and wished them well in the future.

Hand-in-Hand Insurance Company New Amsterdam Branch Supervisor Zaleena Ramkishun hands over the sponsorship cheque to BCB President Anil Beharry in the presence of Surendra Shivrattan, an employee of the sponsor; and BCB Secretary Angela Haniff and Competitions Committee Chairman Carl Moore

Speaking on behalf of the Board, President Anil Beharry said it was once again pleased to partner with Hand-in-Hand Insurance Company Limited.

He thanked the Insurance Company for coming on board once more and said that the tournament was well received over the years and was conducted in a very professional manner. He thanked Carl Moore and his Competition Committee for doing an excellent job.

Beharry pointed out that the Board was disappointed that the West Berbice Cricket Association was unable to secure sponsorship for cricket for teams in the area and as a result, the BCB had no choice but to intervene and make sure the game was kept alive.

Competitions Committee Chairman and long-serving member Carl Moore said that although his workload has increased, he was happy to know that the lovely game of cricket could be played across the length and breadth of the Ancient County. He said from these competitions, new talent was unearthed.

BCB Secretary Angela Haniff also thanked the insurance provider for its continued confidence in the Board and urged the players to maintain discipline at all times.

D’Edward Sports Club are the defending champions.

Jaguars wary of threat from title chasers Pride and Volcanoes

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua - Leaders Guyana Jaguars will be seeking to put themselves beyond the reach of title contenders Barbados Pride and Windward Islands Volcanoes when they face Jamaica in the WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) which resumes on Friday.

Jaguars posted a stunning victory over Pride heading into last weekend’s tournament break while Jamaica suffered another setback losing to Trinidad and Tobago Red Force

Guyana, playing at home, will be looking to land their fifth straight victory, to spoil the title chasing ambitions of Pride and Volcanoes while the visitors will be seeking to avoid their fourth straight defeat.

Both sides have made one change to their squad from the previous round.

Meantime, at Warner Park, The Barbados Pride will attempt to exploit The Leeward Islands Hurricanes, the Cinderella team in the tournament.

Both sides enter the match wounded from their last encounter- the Pride suffering their first defeat of the season and the Hurricanes slumping to their seventh straight loss inside three days.

Victory with a huge haul of batting and bowling points for highly favoured Pride would keep the pressure on the Jaguars.

Kraigg Brathwaite’s side travelled with an unchanged squad from the previous round while their hosts have brought back Montcin Hodge, Jacques Taylor, Anthony Martin and Hayden Walsh Jr in place of Yannick Leonard, Austin Richards Jr, along with the unrelated Peters, Orlando and Sherwin.

Permaul hits back to even Day 1 honours

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Test players Jermaine Blackwood and Chadwick Walton stroked half-centuries to propel Jamaica Franchise but leaders Guyana Jaguars hit back strongly to take a share of the honours on the opening day of their WICB PCL eighth round match here Friday.

Opting to bat first, Jamaica were bowled out for 258 with Blackwood and Walton both hitting the joint top score of 58.

Opener John Campbell chimed in with 48, captain Tamar Lambert hit 34 and Brandon King got 27.

Their efforts allowed Jamaica to cruise to 230 for four at one stage but the spin twin of Veerasammy Permaul and Devendra Bishoo combined to wreck the lower end of the innings, as the visitors lost their last six wickets for 28 runs.

Left-arm spinner Permaul picked up five for 77 while Bishoo claimed four for 62, in outstanding performances after Jamaica threatened a large total at the National Stadium.

At the close, Guyana were already in strong reply at 35 without loss from the nine overs possible.

Assad Fudadin was unbeaten on 18 and was partnered by Rajindra Chandrika on 16, with Guyana requiring a further 224 runs to overhaul their target.

Jamaica started poorly, losing Shacaya Thomas for one with as many on the board, to a catch at gully by Vishaul Singh off seamer Chris Barnwell.

Blackwood and Campbell then combined to repair the damage in an 87-run second wicket stand, which blunted Guyana’s attack.

The right-handed Blackwood produced a breezy cameo, facing 48 balls and striking ten fours while the left-handed Campbell spent 97 balls at the crease, faced 69 deliveries and counted four fours and two sixes.

Permaul eventually claimed both to leave Jamaica rebuilding at lunch at 113 for three and after the break, Walton and Lambert further steadied the innings with a 76-run, fourth wicket partnership.

Walton consumed 106 balls and 2-1/4 hours at the crease and hit eight fours while Lambert faced 110 deliveries in 129 minutes and counted four fours and a six.

Once again, Permaul intervened, removing both batsmen but only after Walton had added 45 for the fifth wicket with King who hammered four fours and a six in a brisk 35-ball innings.

Walton’s dismissal, lbw to Permaul, proved the turning point, however, and Bishoo ran through the lower order to hurt Jamaica.

President Cameron humbled by re-election

By CMC.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaican Dave Cameron has been re-elected president of the West Indies Cricket Board, after comfortably defeating challenger Joel Garner in elections during the Annual General Meeting here Saturday.

In voting that followed anticipated trends, Cameron emerged with an 8-4 victory over the legendary former West Indies fast bowler and current Barbados Cricket Association head.

Cameron’s vice-presidential running mate Emmanuel Nanthan was also returned to power by an 8-4 margin, defeating Garner’s ally Baldath Mahabir, of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board.

“I am particularly humbled at this point that the members, the shareholders have decided to re-elect me,” Cameron said afterward.

“It has been a very difficult couple of months. Prior to that I think we were sailing smoothly … and it would have been an extremely good year and term in office.”

Cameron had come under fire in recent months for his handling of the abandoned tour of India which saw the West Indies team abruptly quitting the five-match One-Day International series last October, in anger over terms and conditions of the newly agreed Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) subsequently put the blame for the cancellation on the WICB and has made a claim of US$42 million in damages.

They have threatened legal action to reclaim the monies if the WICB does not pay up.

Cameron was widely criticized for his handling of the affair, with St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves describing his leadership as “poor” and “embarrassing”, and suggesting he should resign or be fired.

In recent weeks, Cameron also drew heavy criticism when he re-tweeted a fan comment critical of West Indies opener Chris Gayle, and was forced to apologise.

Despite this, however, Cameron received widespread support from the territorial boards, with Guyana, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands and Jamaica all indicating they would support Cameron.

Each board has two votes in the election.

Following his victory on Saturday, Cameron said the India debacle would present opportunities for West Indies cricket to be stronger.

“Every time there is a challenge, there is an opportunity and we’ve used that situation in India as an opportunity and the opportunity we see coming out of this is that we’re going to make West Indies cricket better," he contended.

He said he intended to address the “continued governance challenges” and had already scheduled a meeting with chairman of CARICOM’s Prime Ministerial sub-committee on cricket, Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, to discuss such issues.

Cameron also said they were a number of other points of business to address.

“I am scheduled to visit with Prime Minister Mitchell next week and we’re going to sit down and talk about the continued governance challenges,” he said.

“But very, very first out of the box, is to start putting out the information and even some of the reports that were tabled here [during the meeting]. From today, we really need to start communicating more to our public.”

Two years ago, Cameron beat out Julian Hunte to become one of the youngest ever WICB presidents at age 42.

Garner challenged for the vice-president’s post then and also lost to Nanthan.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Leg-spinner Damion Jacobs’s took his fourth five-wicket haul in his brief first class career to hand Jamaica Franchise the lead over leaders Guyana Jaguars in their eighth round game here Saturday.

The 30-year-old, who shot to prominence in the latter stages of last year’s first class competition, finished with five for 67 to send Guyana crashing to 236 all out in their first innings.

Armed with a slim 22-run lead, Jamaica then lost Shacaya Thomas without scoring to crawl to the close at the National Stadium on 22 for one – an overall lead of 44 runs.

Opener John Campbell was unbeaten on ten and Test batsman Jermaine Blackwood, eight.

Resuming the second day on 35 without loss, Guyana were carried by West Indies left-hander Leon Johnson who top scored with 78 and opener Rajindra Chandrika who got 69.

Left-handers Assad Fudadin (29) and Narsingh Deonarine (23) both got starts but failed to carry on.

Chandrika and Fudadin stretched their first innings partnership to 78 before Fudadin popped a catch to Thomas at short leg off leg-spinner Odean Brown, after facing 67 balls and striking four fours in 1-1/2 hours at the crease.

Johnson joined Chandrika to prevent any further loss and take the Jaguars to lunch at 121 for one.

After the break, Chandrika added just five before falling lbw to seamer Dave Bernard Jr. He faced 139 balls and counted eight fours.

Johnson then held the innings together as his counterparts got starts but failed to hang around. Overall, he faced 177 balls, in just over four hours at the crease and struck ten fours.

He lost Deonarine in the second session and was partnered by veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul on ten, with Guyana on 188 for three at tea.

Jacobs, who had earlier claimed Deonarine, then removed Chanderpaul after the West Indies player had added a mere three runs to his tea time score with Guyana having moved on to 196 for four.

Unbeaten on 50 at the tea interval, Johnson’s march towards three figures was halted when Jacobs removed him on the stroke of the drinks break.

Georgetown, Guyana - Outstanding batting performances by Sahadeo Hardeo and Shaheed Mohamed guided Lower East Bank Lions to a seven-wicket victory over Lower East Coast Bulls when the Cheddi Jagan Memorial/National Sports Commission over-40 T20 knock out competition commenced yesterday.

After restricting Bulls for 136-2 in 20 overs, Lions reached their target in 18.1 overs, ending on 137-3 at Enterprise, East Coast Demerara.

Nigel Estrado and Hardeo set up the chase nicely with an entertaining opening stand of 83. The duo started to attack from the onset as they appeared untroubled, but their dismissal within three runs of each other, gave Bulls some hope which quickly vanished as Mohamed played with a straight bat.

Estrado struck three fours in scoring 23 while Hardeo hammered four fours and three sixes before he was dismissed for an even half century. Lions then lost Deonarine Debidyal for seven, but Mohamed who was given a let off, cracked four fours to end unbeaten on 41, and along with Ronald Jaisingh (05*) saw their team home. Seeraj Bhaimsingh, Chatterpaul Singh and Seemangal Yadram claimed one wicket each.

Earlier, Latchman Yadram and Vishwanauth Gobin featured in an opening stand of 50 to give their team a bright start before Gobin was caught off Johnny Azeez (1-10) for 18. Yadram soon retired hurt for 35, but some lusty hitting by Nadir Baksh propped up his team total. Baksh who added 71 for third wicket with Seemangal Yadram stroked three fours and two sixes before he was run out for 49, while Yadram hit two maximums in scoring 19 not out.

The competition continues on Tuesday.

Permaul, Bishoo maul the Jamaicans

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul finished with a ten-wicket match haul as Guyana Jaguars continued their imperious march through the WICB PCL with a resounding five-wicket win over Jamaica Franchise here Sunday.

Chasing a moderate 161 for victory, Guyana eased to their target late on the third day of the eighth round fixture, to complete their fifth straight win of the tournament.

Captain Leon Johnson stroked 58, Vishaul Singh, 57 while Chris Barnwell finished on 21 not out.

Permaul had earlier claimed five for 33 as Jamaica, starting the day on 22 for one, were bundled out for 138 at the National Stadium here.

He was supported by leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo who picked up four for 22 to end with an eight-wicket match haul.

Permaul, overlooked recently for the West Indies World Cup squad, finished with match figures of ten for 110.

Not for the first time this season, Jamaica’s batting struggled and only Test batsman Jermaine Blackwood with a top score of 47, and opener John Campbell with 28, showed any enterprise.

They put on 77 for the second wicket to lift Jamaica to 78 for one at one stage but once they were separated, the last nine wickets crashed for 50 runs.

Blackwood’s innings was a breezy one, requiring just 57 balls and including five fours and a six while Campbell struck four fours off 53 balls in 79 minutes at the crease.

Permaul removed both within 11 runs and 15 balls of each other, and along with Bishoo, then decimated the remainder of the Jamaica innings.

In pursuit of their victory target, Guyana slipped to 42 for three after fast bowler Jason Dawes, who finished with three for 24, made two early strikes.

He bowled Assad Fudadin for two with the score on 14, trapped the other opener Rajindra Chandrika lbw for 15 with 32 on the board, before leg-spinner Damion Jacobs claimed veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul cheaply for four.

However, Johnson and Vishaul Singh stroked half-centuries in a crucial 89-run, fourth wicket stand which put Guyana on the brink of victory.

Johnson hit five fours off 95 balls in 160 minutes at the crease while Vishaul faced 147 deliveries in 158 minutes and counted six fours.

By the time Dawes returned to claim Vishaul to a catch at the wicket at 131 for four, Jaguars already had victory well within their grasp.

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - A superb all-round performance by the Cheddi Jagan International Airport’s XI was enough to topple Gafoor’s XI in the final of the Rovin Deokie Tapeball Cricket Tournament held at Nirmal Sand Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara on Saturday evening.

CJIA XI won the toss and elected to bat and managed to compile 53 runs in their allotted six overs. Initially, spectators thought that the meagre score would not be enough. Nevertheless, a powerful first over by fast bowler Anil Somwaru and a second by spinner Sunil Sarjoo set the pace for a perfect defence.

The game was firmly in the CJIA XI’s grasp when two crucial wickets fell in the third over, as Somwaru’s display of outstanding bowling continued. A brilliant fourth over kept the pressure firmly on Gafoor’s XI.

At the end of the fourth over, Gafoor’s XI were 16 for two and needed another 38 runs to win from the last two overs. Again, the high-class overhand bowling did it for the CJIA XI.

Georgetown, Guyana - Skipper Mahendra Hardyal led from the front as his team defeated Mahendra Arjune XI to capture the Romaine Car Wash softball title yesterday at GNIC ground, Woolford Avenue.

Hardyal stroked 43 as his team rattled up 146-9, batting first before returning with the ball to take 4-33 to give his team a 23-run victory.

Jagdesh Bhoj and Amarnauth Boodhoo added 45 for the opening stand to give their team a bright start before Bhoj was taken off Ishwar Persaud for 21. Persaud then picked up a few more wickets before Hardyal steadied the innings with level-headed batting. He struck two fours and three sixes and got valuable support from Troy Kippins (15*) down the order.  Persaud claimed 4-30 and Peter Persaud 3-27.

Arjune XI threatened briefly before they were bowled out for 123 in 19.4 overs. Arjune laid the foundation for the chase with an attacking 36 which contained three fours and two sixes. He shared in a first wicket stand of 30 with Lyndon Lyght who was dismissed for 18.

Following the demise of Lyght, Arjune XI suffered a mini collapse before Peter Persaud smashed 37 (3×4,2×6) down the order to give his team hope, but steady bowling by Hardyal backed up by Satro Seeraj (3-33) ensured their team earned a well deserved victory. Hardyal XI received a trophy.

Georgetown, Guyana - A mature and classy half century from national Under-17 opener Adrian Sukwah and a four wicket haul from his Albion team mate Asif Ally led the powerful Lower Corentyne Under-17 team to a massive 9-wicket victory over New Amsterdam/Canje Combined in the final of the Republic Bank Guyana Limited Inter Zone 2014 Under-17 competition played last Saturday at the Albion Sports Complex.

New Amsterdam/Canje won the toss and elected to take first strike with a reasonable start of 23 before they lost the prolific Guyana Under-15 all rounder Kevin Sinclair for 8.
