Persaud spins Cultural CC to win over Media XI

Georgetown, Guyana - Forty-eight-year-old Sham Persaud rolled back the years last Sunday, with an incisive spell of spin-bowling to lead Cultural Cricket Club (CCC) to a 24-run victory over the Guyana Media XI in a feature 20/20 match at the club’s ground in Canal Number Two Polder.

Inserted to take first strike on a wicket that was conducive to bowling due to some moisture, the hosts battled the challenges well to post 113-9 from their allotted overs.

Persaud then went to work, ripping through the middle and lower order to finish with 6-15 from four tantalising overs of off-spin, as the Media boys were routed for 89 in 18.3 overs, much to the delight of a fair-size crowd that witnessed the encounter.

Persaud, whose guile and accuracy suited the conditions, removed openers Ravi Persaud and Rajiv Bisnauth in his first over to start a dramatic collapse after the Media practitioners were coasting at 50-2 in the 10th over.

He then followed up with a hat-trick in his third over and another wicket in his final over as the visitors lost the last eight wickets for just 35 runs – receiving solid support from Steve Haripaul and Ghansham Mahabal, who picked up 2-14 and 2-17 respectively.

NCB’s Ravi Persaud top-scored for the Media XI with 29, while fellow left-hander Daniel Singh of Guyana Times and TVG Ch. 28 made 21.

Earlier, seamer Keon Blades picked up 4-13 from four overs and Bisnauth 2-22 to limit the hosts to below 120 a total which would have been much less,, had the Media boys not left off former national youth player Dayanand Roopnarine, who was dropped thrice on his way to a topscore of 39.

The left-hander, dropped early in his innings, struck two fours and two sixes, and received support from former national wicket/keeper batsman and guest player Sheik Mohamed who made 23.

At the presentation ceremony, which followed the game, Sham Persaud took away two trophies after he was adjudged best bowler and man-of-the-match, while Roopnarine was the best batsman of the day’s encounter.

Trophies for the teams were also given out, all compliments of Tiger Sports of Old Road, Enmore, East Coast Demerara.

President of the CCC, Gobin Persaud, said his executives were elated to host the Media XI, and said he is hopeful that the alliance with the players will be a long and successful one, while he lauded both teams for the spirit in which the game was played, noting that the camaraderie and brotherhood were evident during the on-field exchanges.

Media XI skipper John Ramsingh expressed gratitude to the CCC for being great hosts, adding the hospitality was excellent. Both teams look forward to playing a rematch shortly in Georgetown.

Jaguars resume PCL R4D training today

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Even though they lead the points standing with 107 points after recording six wins from their seven matches competed in the West Indies Cricket Board/Professional Cricket League Regional four-day tournament so far, the Guyana Jaguars bowlers have struggled to dismiss the opposition lower order.

This has resulted in the batsmen posting record-breaking totals as in the case of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes when Gavin Tonge and Jeremiah Louis added 65 for the final wicket, thus delaying the Jaguars’ march to victory.

It was also evident in their fifth round encounter against Jamaica Franchise, their opponents for this Friday’s eight round clash at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, where the last-wicket pair added a record 88 to stall another victory march for the Jaguars.

However, assistant coach and manager of the Jaguars, Rayon Griffith, in an invited comment with Chronicle Sport yesterday, is reminding his bowlers who have struggled in recent times against lower order batsmen, to continue to exercise patience.

“We are working on dispatching the tail of our opponents as quickly as possible, something our bowlers have struggled with throughout this competition. However, that aside, our bowlers are doing a tremendous job for us and I just wish to congratulate and at the same time encourage them on a job well done so far.

Having said that, I also wish to remind them that patience is virtue and it reaps success also, so while they have struggled to dispatch the opposition lower order quickly, I wish to take this time to remind them to be patient,” said Griffith.

He said the Jaguars along with the players who were contracted to train in the Cricket Guyana Inc. Academy earlier this year, will be at the Guyana National Stadium from 13:00hrs today, where they will commence preparations for this weekend’s clash.

Quizzed on whether there are any injuries in the team right now, Griffith without hesitation replied in the negative, but said, “I know of no injuries being reported to me even as we speak now, but when the guys gather at the stadium tomorrow (today), then we will know if any of them has any injuries or niggles.”

He is of the strong view that once the Jaguars continue to do what they have been doing so far, even though they suffered a shocking two-run defeat to the Barbados Pride in the third round, they can maintain their supremacy in the tournament with a win over the Jamaicans this weekend.

However, he expressed concern that his top and middle order have not been able to click and blend in with the lower order who have been doing very well throughout the tournament.

“It’s of deep concern to us, (head coach Esaun Crandon and me) that the top and middle order have not been clicking and blending in with the lower order so far. Once we can get that done and the lower order continues to do what they have been doing in the past games with the bat, then we will post a mammoth total against our opponents.

“This will also enable our bowlers to exercise more patience when they are in the field, irrespective of who the opposition is, as they have been doing a tremendous job for us in the seven games we have played so far,” said Griffith.

Griffith took the time to shower praise on the administrators of CGI, who he believes is doing a tremendous job in overseeing the affairs of the Jaguars, while at the same time they have contracted 12 other players who can be called cubs of the Jaguars, to undergo training under a team of coaches.

“With all due respect to the past administrators of the game in Guyana, the way CGI is handling the affairs of the Jaguars, certainly underlines the professional approach which is needed for the administration of cricket in Guyana.

In addition to that, I wish to commend the management of CGI, for the brilliant idea wherein 12 other players who were not contracted by the WICB for the PCL were given contracts and are presently undergoing training sessions under the guidance of coaches Michael Hyles-Franco and Clive Grimmond” said Griffith.

He believes that such a move by CGI would definitely serve the Jaguars in the long run, since management can look to the Academy and select a suitable replacement player for the Jaguars frontline squad, if such a need arises.

The Jaguars, who are being led by West Indies left-handed batsman Leon Johnson, with Vishaul Singh as his deputy, will be at the Guyana National Stadium over the next three days at various times, preparing for their eighth-round clash with the Jamaica Franchise who are expected in Guyana sometime today.

Georgetown, Guyana - A brilliant all-round performance from former Guyana Under-19 player Khemraj Mahadeo eventually led Rose Hall Town Bakewell to their third successive victory in the Raffik and Sons 20 overs tournament for teams in the Lower/Central Corentyne area.

Playing against Jai Hinds at the Albion Front Ground, the 30-year-old took 2 for 17 off his four overs before slamming an aggressive 58 to lead RHT Bakewell to an easy eight-wicket victory.

Batting first after losing the toss, Jai Hinds reached a respectable 146-9 off their allotted 20 overs.  D Naidu topscored with an attractive 50, with four huge sixes and a boundary, while L Veersammy chipped in with 44 (2×4, 3×6).

The pair added 90 for the third wicket but when Mahadeo bowled Veersammy in the 15th over, Jai Hinds suffered a major collapse from a healthy 110-2 to 146-9.

Bowling for RHT Bakewell, Mahadeo was supported by Sherain Murray (3-27); off-spinner Azam Khan (2-30), and West Indies female pacer Erva Giddings (2-22).

In their run chase, Mahadeo and former Berbice Under-19 player Vishal Crandon added 98 off 10 overs before Crandon was dismissed for 43 (2×4, 3×6).

However, when Mahadeo fell at 115-2, RHT Bakewell was well within reach of the winning target. Mahadeo struck five fours and two sixes.

Former national player Delbert Hicks and Brandon Prashad then added 35 runs in an unbroken third-wicket partnership to take the visitors to 150-2 in 17.3 overs.

Hicks was unbeaten on 20, while the promising Prashad was on 18.

Georgetown, Guyana - Tiger Sports, of Old Road, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, is into the business of sports gear, trophies and other sport-related equipment , but its aim is much more than providing quality equipment for the country’s sportsmen and women.

In fact, the company, which is operated by former national wicketkeeper/batsman Sheik Mohamed, is also doing its bit to mould local talent.

At a match on Sunday at the Cultural Cricket Club Ground in Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara, where the hosts played against the Guyana Media XI, Mohamed, who appeared as a guest player for the home team, presented a pair of batting gloves to Ravi Persaud, who opens the batting for the Media XI.

The left-handed Persaud captured the interest of Mohamed, who was also a national selector attached to the Guyana Cricket Board.

Persaud topscored for the Media XI with 29, and immediately after the game, Mohamed made the presentation to the young batsman. Mohamed said he was impressed with the way Persaud went about constructing his innings, noting that he was an obvious talent.

Persaud expressed gratitude to Mohamed for the kind gesture, adding that he was grateful for the support.

Johnson - Jaguars to maintain momentum

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Guyana Jaguars Captain Leon Johnson urged his side to show the same “relentless” approach that characterised their four-wicket win over Barbados Pride in Round Seven of the West Indies Cricket Board Professional Cricket League four-day tournament when they play the Jamaica franchise from Friday at the Guyana National Stadium.

The victory helped the Jaguars to consolidate their position at the top of the table with 107 points.  They have being the dominant force throughout the tournament with six outright wins for the season.

However, Johnson said that while the prospect of winning the title was definitely on course, it was important to maintain the winning momentum in the three remaining games.

After the game against the Jamaicans, the Guyanese will tackle Trinidad and Tobago Red Force from March 13 at home before playing hosts Windward Islands Volcanoes from March 20, in the final round.

“Momentum is certainly very important. We have been playing good cricket so far in the tournament; we only lost one game out of seven, so it’s obviously important that we continue playing well,” Johnson pointed out.

The 27 year-old West Indies batsman was pleased with the businesslike manner in which the players went about their duties so far, an attitude, he said, signalled their enthusiasm in ensuring the South Americans win the title for the first time in 17 years.

While, the Guyanese has won six Regional titles, their last was back in 1998 when they shared it with the Leeward Islands.

“Our disciplines have been good in all departments, but I think we could be a little better in the field, but mainly our discipline has been good and we have been gelling well as a unit. I thing the management staff has created that atmosphere where the players are comfortable, hence the good performances,” Johnson related.

Meanwhile, the squad resumed training on Tuesday at the Guyana National Stadium.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul during training on Tuesday

Former Captain Assad Fudadin, who was on the injured list is back to full fitness and was part of the Tuesday’s training.

He is expected to undergo a number of fitness tests before making a return to the side.

Guyana Jaguars Assistant Coach/Manager Rayon Griffith had told Guyana Times Sport on Thursday last that while the West Indies left-handed batsmen may be medically clear, the team management will still have to carry out some physical tests in order to make a decision on Fudadin’s return.

The 29-year-old had fractured his right little finger during West Indies’ warm-ups on the first morning of the Centurion Test in December last year.

Fudadin had surgery on the finger later in the day, before returning home. Ironically, Fudadin had himself been brought into the squad as a replacement player, after Darren Bravo withdrew due to personal reasons.

The Pride is in second position in the regional tournament on 82 points followed by the Windward Islands Volcanoes, 80; Jamaica Franchise, 60; Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, 47, and Leeward Islands Hurricanes 17.

Georgetown, Guyana - Assistant Coach of the Guyana Jaguars cricket team Rayon Griffith expressed satisfaction with yesterday’s workout and fielding session as the local team resumed preparations for the next game against Jamaica at Providence on Friday when the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Four-Day First Class cricket Franchise resumes after a 10-day break with three eight round fixtures.

Griffith, who is also the Chairman of the National Selection Panel, informed that the players returned to ‘camp’ yesterday after being allowed to spend some time with their families after returning home last week Tuesday following their win against host Barbados in Bridgetown in the seventh round.

The Jaguars, with six wins and a loss, lead the points table with 107 points, 25 more than their nearest challenger Barbados, has two consecutive games at home before travelling to Dominica for their final game and Griffith informed that the 13-man squad to face Jamaica should be picked by tomorrow.

The Jaguars resumed preparations yesterday for their next match against Jamaica with an intense workout with trainer Kezqweyah Yisrael.

The 36-year-old former Guyana pacer said that apart from Taignarine Chanderpaul’s fractured left hand everyone else is ready to play and expressed satisfaction with the catching and fielding of West Indies left-handed batsman Assad Fudadin, who seems have recovered from a finger injury he sustained in a fielding drill on the morning of the first Test in South Africa between the host and the West Indies in January.

“He (Fudadin) was catching well today (yesterday) and today when we hold our batting and bowling sessions he will be assessed to see how he grips the bat and plays his shots,” Griffith, who 56 wickets from 22 First-Class matches, explained.

He hinted that there would not be too many changes in the squad since he was pleased the contributions made by the players in what is turning out to be Guyana’s beat First-Class season in 17 years when they last won a Regional First Class title, sharing the 1998 championship with the Leeward Islands.

Griffith informed that team spirit and confidence was very high in the team and is confident that his charges can extend their lead in their last three matches to win the competition.

DCB Inter Association U-17 cricket …East Coast dethrone GT to take the crown

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - On a rainy day on the East Coast of Demerara, host East Coast’s final round game against West Demerara in the Demerara Cricket Board’s (GCB) Inter Association Under-17 cricket contest never started yesterday due to soggy patches on the Enterprise ground, leaving the two teams share to the points.

The washed out game was set for an after Lunch start when the skies opened up for the second time and deposited a persistent shower which lasted well into the afternoon to the end the contest in a no-result, leaving East Coast as the only unbeaten team in the four-team tournament.

With victories against East Bank by 76 runs on Monday at Enterprise and defending champions Georgetown by four wickets on Tuesday the washed out game yesterday put East Coast, led by victorious national Under-15 Skipper Baskar Yadram, on top of the points and earned them the Championship title.

The City side, who defeated West Demerara by nine wickets in their opening match before losing to East Coast, were aiming to beat East Bank yesterday in the other final round game at the Police ground and hope that West Demerara, who were beaten by 20 runs by East Bank, staged an upset win over East Coast for the tournament to be decided on net run rate.

Champions East Coast! Skipper Baskar Yadram is third from left sitting while leading run scorer Ramnarine Chatura is to his right. Coach Latchman Yadram is sitting 2nd from right.

However, heavy overnight and morning rain left the Eve Leary ground in an unplayable condition to leave East Coast with two wins and a no-result, while Georgetown and East Bank both had victories over West Demerara to finish with one win each.

East Coast were spearheaded by the tournament’s leading run scorer National Under-17 batsman Ramnarine Chatura who fashioned a classy unbeaten 71 against East Bank before making 63 not out the next day against Georgetown, while Gavin Budwah, who got scores of 62 not out and 37 was the other East Coast batsman to register a half-century.

Yadram with an unfinished 43 and Shrichand Gangaram who reached an undefeated 26 were the other players to bat well for the champions. Baskar Deodat had a couple of two-wicket hauls while Afzal Rohaman took three wickets in two matches.

East Coast Coach Latchman Yadram said that his team was very experienced since seven members would have played last year, adding that he was pleased the DCB sub Association emerged winners this year.

He however, expressed disappointment that the adverse weather robbed his team of exposing the two players who did not participate in the first two matches.
