As was done during the first three years, team representatives will be equipped with the tournament booklet which clearly outlines the format of the competition, fixtures and prize money.

Georgetown, Guyana - A fine all-round performance by Trevor Benn guided Guyana Police Force (GPF) to a 16-run victory over Guyana Fire Service (GFS) in the final of the Joint Services T20 competition yesterday at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.

Benn stroked 54 before returning with the ball to capture 4-43 from four overs to help restrict Fire Service to 144-8 in reply to Police’s 160-9, thus earning the man-of-the-match award. Police lost the early wicket of Troy Benn (02) lbw to Royston Simon with the score on 15 after they were inserted.

They continued to lose wickets at regular intervals before Benn and Kelvin Leitch resurrected the innings with a 91-run eight wicket stand, taking advantage of some wayward bowling and sloppy fielding.

Senior Superintendent of Police and chairman of Joint Service sports committee, Dale Alves presents the trophy to Police captain Trevor Benn in the presence of other members of the victorious team.

Benn slammed three fours and a similar number of sixes while Leitch scored 37 with three fours and two maximums. Brentnol Woolford was their next best batsman with 16 as medium pacer Greyson Paul captured 3-12 from four overs and Sheldon Phillips 2-19 off four.

Left arm pacer Randolph Knights made early inroads into the GFS batting by bowling Sherwin Neblette (04) and having Devon Hart (06) caught leaving the score at 14-2. Fire Service lost a few more quick wickets before Stephon Adams (19) and Quacy Mentore (07) attempted to repair the damage with a fifth wicket stand of 27.

Adams and Malcolm Morris who top scored with 21 then featured in a sixth wicket stand of 26, before Benn ended their resistance by trapping Adams lbw and had Morris taken in the deep. Sheldon Phillips struck one four and two sixes in scoring 20 towards the end of the innings. Knights finished with 3-14 and Leitch 2-12.

Singh leads his side to warm-up victory

Georgetown, Guyana - Skipper Vishaul ‘Cheesy’ Singh led from the front with a resilient century, which together with half-centuries from Steven Jacobs and Shimron Hetmyer guided Singh’s XI to a two-wicket victory over Johnson’s XI in the first four-day practice match organised by Cricket Guyana Inc.

Needing to score 334 to chalk up a come-from-behind win, with 305 of those runs needed on the final day, Singh’s XI reached 336 for 8 off 98.5 overs, thanks to 109 from Singh, 68 from Jacobs and an even 50 from Hetmyer, while Veerasammy Permaul took 6 for 133.

Scores from the contest, Johnson’s XI 240 and 287 for 8 decl’d; Singh’s XI 196 and 336 for 8.

Singh’s XI resumed the day on 29 without loss, with Tagenarine Chanderpaul on 13 and Kandasammy Surujnarine 15 and quickly lost the former who was bowled by Permaul in the third over of the day at 30 for 1 without any addition to his overnight score.

It should have been 30 for 2, had Robin Bacchus held a chance from Hetmyer at forward short leg, two balls after the younger Chanderpaul was dismissed, to which the left-handed batsman said thanks by hitting both Keon Joseph and Paul Wintz for boundaries.

At the other end, a positive-looking Surujnarine showed intent and purpose with a straight drive for four past Joseph, before he was run-out by Trevon Griffith, looking for a second single after turning Permaul to deep midwicket for 35 (63 balls, 4×4) at 62 for 2.

Singh’s XI Shimron Hetmyer goes down the ground during his robust half-century yesterday before his dismissal, as Robin Bacchus (right), Rajendra Chandrika (backing camera) and wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble look on.

Singh strode to the wicket on a pair and, having opened his account with a four off Permaul, watched as Hetmyer hit the same bowler for six over long on, as he posted his half-century off 50 balls with five fours and one six.

Reckless shot selections have been the downfall of Hetmyer and yesterday was no different, when he spooned a catch to Christopher Barnwell at short midwicket off Permaul, three balls after posting his half-century at 115 for 3 – their score at lunch which was taken with Singh on 10 and Royston Crandon yet to score.

After the interval, Singh saw the demise of Crandon (3) and Ricardo Adams (7), leaving his side on 129 for 5 as Jacobs made his way to the wicket, following which the duo added 152 for the sixth wicket that virtually swung the match in their side’s favour.

They took the score to 179 for 5 at tea and after the break, Singh first posted his 50 from 160 balls with five fours and six off Permaul, while Jacobs, who was later given a life by Permaul at mid-on off Keon Joseph who encountered no-ball problems, got his off 102 balls with seven fours.

They drove with authority at anything loose outside the off-stump from the Johnson’s XI bowlers, with Jacobs hitting Jonathan Foo for four in the first over after tea and Singh following suit with two fours in the bowler’s next over, as he conceded 18 runs to the victory without much of a fuss.

Jacobs went at 281 for 6, caught ay deep backward squareleg by Bacchus off Permaul for a well-constructed 68 that included 9 fours scored off 121 balls, shortly after which Singh got to his 100 and the lone one of the contest, having faced 234 balls, hitting 10 fours and one six at 306 for 6.

He departed shortly after for 109, caught by Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai at long on off Permaul with the score at 329 for 8, after seeing the demise of Kemo Paul for 14, but Jason Sinclair who was unbeaten on 13, finished the game with a crisp four off Narsingh Deonarine, having at the other end Amir Khan who was on 2.

The second and final practice match will be contested at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, from Tuesday November 4 at which time Barbados’ Raymond Reifer the lone foreigner in the Guyana Jaguars lineup, would have arrived and conducted his fitness test et al.

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Young Warriors having played unbeaten through the preliminary stage in the competition so far will start with a psychological advantage when the two teams clash in the semi-final of the Carib Beer T20 first division cricket competition on Sunday at the Port Mourant ground.

Their batting will be spearheaded by the prolific Young West Indies and senior national opener Shimron Hetmyer. Only last Saturday he tore apart the Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets bowling attack with a 33 ball 73.

He will get support from his brother, Seon Hetmyer, a former national youth batsman and current Berbice player, Wahied Edwards, Kevin Ramdeen, Ishwar Singh, Linden Austin, former national T20 star Imran Khan and Vishal Mohabir.

In the bowling department, they boast four spinners who have done the damage in the competition so far in former Berbice cricketer Balram Samaroo, Ramdeen, Austin and Kassim Khan. The pace attack will be in the hands of Suresh Dhanai, Vishal Mohabir and Devendra Ramoutar.

On the other hand, Universal Solutions Bermine is on a roll with three consecutive victories thanks mainly to their formidable bowling attack.

Their fiery pace attack will consist of Canada and former Guyana player Jeremy Gordon with support from Romario Shepherd and Niall Smith who represented Berbice and Guyana at the under-19 level respectively, this year.

Kingston, Jamaica - Local cricket fans will be able to see some of the country's finest cricketers in Twenty20 (T20) action when the third edition of the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF)-sponsored Jamaica Premier League begins tomorrow.

In the marquee clash of Round One, title-holders MoBay Sixers battle last season's losing finalists and 2012 winners University Dynamites at the Manley Horne Park in St Elizabeth, starting at 1:30 pm.

In the opening game at the Manley Horne venue, Kingston Hurricanes face Mandeville Thunder at 9:30 am.

Tomorrow's other game will feature Spanish Town Titans and Ocho Rios Chargers at Chedwin Park, starting at 1:30 pm.

Speaking during Thursday evening's launch at the Cuddy'z Restaurant, Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) general secretary Fritz Harris welcomed the opportunity for players to continue honing their skills in the hugely popular T20 format.

"Our players are improving in the T20 format of the game. We have a number of players on the international stage and we have a number of budding players who are gaining recognition around the world. We want to keep that production line going and produce players of a high standard," he said.

Building support for the players and the six franchises is also important, according to Harris. He said entertainment and prize giveaways will be a feature on match days.

"We also want to keep a fan base. That is why we spend so much time focusing on the package that will be married with the cricket."

The TEF sponsorship is $8million and covers the budget of the 2014 tournament.

The Sport Development Foundation (SDF) is also donating $750,000 to the JCA which will largely go towards a special event that is expected to be announced in the coming days.

JCA officials were optimistic that other sponsors could get on board during the JPL T20.

There will be five rounds of preliminary matches before a play-off encounter between the second-placed and third-placed teams at Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium on November 30.

The top team at the end of the preliminary stage automatically advances to the final and will face the winner of the clash between second and third. The final is scheduled for Sabina Park on December 13.
