Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - In days gone by teams easily fielded teams in the Case Cup first division, Northcote Cup second division, Penta intermediate division and the Third Class tournament…all at the same time.

Those days are now gone and interest for the once glorious game is less than lukewarm even among those playing the game.

Yesterday, the opening day of the latest round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Hadi’s two-day first division competition was marred by two games not being played due the unavailability of players as clubs struggled to field teams.

At Camp Road, Transport Sports Club (TSC) got a walk over from Everest, while at Malteenoes the game between the hosts and DCC was cancelled because DCC, who are engaged in the second division semi-final against Police, could not put together a first division team.

Randy Lindore drives uppishly at GDF yesterday.

The problem stemmed from the fact that the players in the Guyana Jaguars training squad were not allowed to play by Cricket Guyana Inc (CGI) due to their practice schedule. Everest was the heaviest hit by CGI’s decision.

In the only first division match played the Army and Police were locked in a tight battle for first innings points at Camp Ayanganna when bails were lifted on day one.

GDF were 83-3, 73 runs behind the 156 made by the Cops with seven wickets in hand. Police were given a solid 43-run start by Rawle Browne and Mark Persaud who both made 19, before 32-year-old Gilford Moore, who played five First-Class matches for CCC, trapped Browne LBW.

Daniel Barker who hammered four boundaries in 31 and former National youth players Shameer Fazal whose 26 included four fours and a six, put together 47 for the fourth wicket before Fazal was caught and bowled by Jeremiah Harris to leave Police on 98-4 after Lunch was taken 97-3.

Harris had 3-8, off-spinner Markus Watkins 3-7 and Moore 2-19 did the damage with the ball for the Soldiers who lost their first wicket on 38 when Colin McPherson (9) was taken at mid-off as pacer Seon Daniels made the breakthrough.  Dameon Ross hit four fours in 30 before he fell at 61-2, while Randy Lindore (5) departed at 71-3. Watkins (18*) and Harris (9*) were the not out batmen when play ended in fading light.

TORONTO, Canada – Glowing tributes were the order of the day when the Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) held its 34thannual presentation dinner and dance at the Eastown Banquet Hall last Sunday night.

The tributes were attributed to the late Budh-Dave Tewari Anandjit, the former long-standing stalwart executive and member who passed away on July 22 last at the age of 53.

Anandjit, who was the brother of Davteerth Anandjit, the former president of the Guyana Cricket Umpires Council (GCUC), served the SCA with distinction for over two decades, having joined the body in 1990.

Prior to that, he was a member of the Raiders and Ramblers Cricket Club and a founding-member of International Sports Club (ISL) in 1988.

During his sojourn in the SCA, Anandjit served in various capacities, but will be fondly remembered for his association with the development of several talented youth cricketers. This fact was fully highlighted when the SCA presented a plaque to his wife Liz, praising Anandjit for his selfless contribution to the development of cricket in the Scarborough area.

SCA executives Bisham Singh (left) and Vish Jadunauth hand over the plaque to Liz Anandjit in the presence of other family members.

As a Level Two coach, Budh-Dave concentrated heavily on teaching the youths the game of cricket in the SCA and Toronto & Districts (T&D).

Anandjit was also a Level Two umpire and officiated in several games in the SCA and the Ontario Softballl Cricket League (OSCL) over the years. He also played for Golden Touch in the OSCL tournaments.

Not satisfied with his prowess in cricket, Anandjit volunteered his time with Parks and Recreation in Toronto while assisting the youths and was also an ardent golfer.

The late Guyanese was also credited as being the first player to hit six sixes in an over in Scarborough while his club ISL achieved the unique distinction of winning three consecutive Premiere League titles. He was also part of the winning combination when Kaieteur captured the title.

Born at Wash Clothes, Mahaicony Creek, East Coast Demerara, Guyana, Anandjit later moved to Courbane Park, Annandale and attended Queen’s College High School in Georgetown before he migrated to Canada in 1983.

The union between himself and Liz Anandjit produced three children in Pretima, Jodh and Jaya Anandjit and apart from Davteerth, his other siblings are Bram, Silla, Subhas, Gyan, Monsranie, Tara, Kulwant, Chinta, Nate and ‘Chano’.

Georgetown, Guyana - A heavy shower at around 14:25hrs yesterday afternoon created a premature end to the first semifinal of the Georgetown Cricket Association organized Noble House Seafoods sponsored second division matchup between host Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Police Sports Club at Queenstown.

Resuming on their overnight total of 94 for 2 with Tevin Imloch and Andrew Gibson on 14 and 12 respectively in reply to PSC’s first innings score of 250, DCC reached 134 for 3 off 47 overs when rain curtailed the action.

Imloch and Gibson stretched their third wicket partnership from 23 overnight to 57, before Imloch was bowled by Pernell London (1 for 10) for 32 (5×4) at 128 for 3, while the heavens opened up six runs later with Gibson on 31 (5×4) and Dexter George 1*, while Vishal Jaigobin ended with 2 for 44.

In an invited comment with Chronicle Sport, Chairman of the GCA’s Competitions Committee Shaun Massiah said an executive meeting will be held from which a decision would be made as to whether the game would be played or who would advance based on the playing conditions.

Teams are asked to note that the final 11 that was declared for this rain interrupted fixture is the one that must take the field for the replayed fixture, barring injuries during the time of the decision being arrived at by the GCA.

Foo misses ton, 50 for Chanderpaul

Georgetown, Guyana - Temperamental middle-order batsman Jonathan Foo missed scoring a century yesterday for Johnson’s XI who faced Singh’s XI in their practice encounter at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, as part of their preparation phase for this year’s upcoming West Indies Cricket Board Professional Cricket League.

Winning the toss and batting first on a track which had some moisture in it, Johnson’s XI slipped to 22 for 4 within the first hour as they lost Rajendra Chandrika (1), Robin Bacchus (0), Narsingh Deonarine (1) and Trevon Griffith (17) to the bowling of Jeremy Gordon and Raun Johnson.

Forty-year-old dependable Guyana and West Indies middle-order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul 52 (4×4, 1×6) and Christopher Barnwell 27 (2×4) brought some respectability to their team’s total with their 60-run fifth-wicket partnership, before Barnwell was removed by Gordon, courtesy of a Royston Crandon’s catch.

The elder Chanderpaul, then added an additional 42 for the sixth wicket with Foo, realising his half-century from 104 balls with four fours and a six over mid-on off Anthony Adams, before Crandon held another catch to account for the left-handed Chanderpaul, this time off Steven Jacobs.

Well played Johnny! Jonathan Foo of Johnson’s XI plays a forward defensive shot against the bowling of Amir Khan (foreground) yesterday, while from left, Shimron Hetmyer, Steven Jacobs, Jason Sinclair (wkp.) and Tagenarine Chanderpaul look on. (Photo by Adrian Narine)

Foo, who mixed sound defence with aggression to hit Amir Khan for a hat-trick of sixes, was joined by the in-form Anthony Bramble who failed to get going this time around and was stumped by Jason Sinclair off Khan at 128 for 7.

It was a wicket that brought joy to Singh’s XI that was being led by Vishaul Singh and at the same time sorrow, as Foo and his Albion Cricket Club teammate Veerasammy Permaul resisted their bowling efforts to post 93 for the eighth wicket.

Permaul struck five fours in his 24, even as Foo continued after taking 89 balls to post his half-century that was decorated with three fours and the same number of sixes, celebrating after with two audacious drives through extra cover off Johnson, midway the afternoon session.

Foo lost both Permaul and Kemol Savory (0) at 221 for 9 but in tandem with Paul Wintz who was unbeaten on 10 (1×4), pushed the score to 240 before he (Foo) was the last man out, caught at deep cover by Anthony Adams off Kemo Paul for 85 (131 balls, 8×4, 3×6).

Gordon, a Canada-based Guyanese finished with 4 for 41 and Adams 2 for 38, while there was a wicket each for Jacobs, Paul, Khan and Johnson bowling for Singh’s XI who at the close of play were 16 without loss.

Deonarine grassed an outside edge off the bat of Kandasammy Surujnarine (2) off the bowling of Wintz at 15 for 1 in the penultimate over of the day, while at the other end, Tagenarine Chanderpaul is unbeaten on 9, heading into the second day’s play when the action commences at 09:30hrs.

Georgetown, Guyana - A century by captain of Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Jeetrendra Sookdeo could not save GCC from defeat at the hands of Upper Corentyne Cricket Association (UCCA) XI on Sunday at the Number 69 Ground.

Sookdeo hit 102 (12×4) as the two teams met in a friendly encounter with GCC losing by six wickets.

Electing to bat the visitors reached 204 in 43.3 overs after the game was reduced to 45 overs a side.

Sookdeo put on 80 with Elon Fernandes for the third wicket after the team lost an early wicket.  Fernandes’ 39 (4×4, 1×6) was the only other knock that offered any resistance to the UCCA bowling attack.

The wining UCCA team poses for a photo opportunity after the game

Sean Periera 4-36 off nine overs and K. Kamdeen 2-41 off nine overs were the best bowlers for UCCA.

UCCA wasted little time in their run chase as Shimron Hetmyer slammed 92 runs (11×4, 1×6) whilst putting on 112 in 16 overs for the first wicket pair with Akesh Hamraj who made 34.

Hetmyer who was on 68 when the first wicket fell then partnered with Imram Mohamed (29) to help solidify the innings.

Hetmyer was LBW to part time bowler before Lakram Latchman (19 NO) and captain Ishwar Singh (15 N0) saw UCCA home in 31.3 overs.

President of the UCCA Dennis D’Andrade thanked the visitors for the much needed practice match. Arrangements are being made for a return encounter.

Georgetown, Guyana - A polished half-century first up from former national wicket-keeper, Delbert Hicks and seven wickets between spinners Kevin Ramdeen and Linden Austin helped Chamber Eleven to a 13-run victory over West Berbice Combined in the feature T20 game of the Berbice Chambers of Commerce and Development Association/Corporate Business Industry Sports (CBIS) 2014 tournament played on Saturday evening at the Albion Sports Complex.

Spin was thought to be a factor at the start of the match because of the presence of cracks on the pitch.

Chamber Eleven chose to bat, after the game was reduced to 15 overs, due to time. They posed a challenging total of 142-3, when the overs expired with Hicks smashed his way to 59. His innings spanned just 36 balls, inclusive of seven fours and a six.

Captain of the victorious Chamber Eleven, Eshwar Singh collecting the winning trophy and cash prize

Seon Hetymer, 34 off 28 balls and Kevin Ramdeen unbeaten 20 were the other two major contributors with the bat.

Played under the theme ‘Building and Developing Unity Among Corporate Partners’, the one-day event also saw fourteen softball teams participated in the softball segment.

New Building Society (NBS) won that segment.

The tournament in its fifth year was aimed at bringing together players from Corporate Guyana with the intention of building bridges and friendships among workers.

TORONTO, Canada – Primed and ready for their Guyana invasion, Dant were the centre of attraction when the Ontario Softball Cricket League (OSCL) held its glamorous and radiant 19th annual Presentation Dinner and Dance at the Eastown Banquet Hall here, last Saturday night.

In a dream debut season competing in the OSCL, Dant, who are scheduled to participate in the fourth edition of the Guyana Softball Cup this weekend, made an unprecedented clean sweep of all the major titles while their players also took home the lion’s share of the top awards.

Dant’s titles included being crowned West Division regular season champions, winning the newly-introduced T-20 tournament, West Division play-off champions, ruling the roost in the 15-over competition and carting off the prestigious Grand championship.

While Dant excelled it was another bitter-sweet season for East Coast Sports Cub who had to settle for the runners-up spot in the Grand championship for the third consecutive season, losing to Dant in a close final.

They were however crowned East Division winners, turning back the challenge of Caribbean Sensation in another nail-biting finish. East Coast also captured both the T-10 and the 15-over Consolation titles, winning from Cougars and Matrix respectively.

Dant’s success was built mainly on an all-round team effort with former Guyana Under-19 batsman Shaun Deonandan being among the outstanding performers, registering the most runs (353) in the West Division. Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards were won by Farouk Hussain (T-10), Riaz Kadir (West Division playoffs and 15-over final) and Aftab Shamshudeen (Grand championship).

For East Coast, Rakesh Dyal stood out with a hat-trick and also claimed the most wickets (25) in the East Division. Former Guyana Under-19 batsman Krishna Deosarran was one of two MVP awardees, the other being his cousin Surujpaul Deosarran who got the nod in the T-10 and 15-over finals as well as in the Grand championship.

Apart from Dyal, other outstanding awards recipients were Azeem Khan (Matrix), Jairam Ramoutar (Better Hope), Hazari Girdhari (Enmore) Robert Kanhai (Robbies) and Narindra Buchana all of who claimed hat-tricks while Better Hope’s Davendra Ramkissoon had the unique distinction of clobbering six consecutive sixes.

Richard Dias of Better Hope tallied the most runs (386) in the East Division Conference A and Ganesh Mahadeo of Rebels (507 runs) in Conference B. Sheldon Burnett of Cougars had the honour of bagging the most wickets (30) in East Division Conference A while Vijay Prashad of Cricketers Cove topped the West Division with 20 wickets.

Georgetown, Guyana - After seeing national all-rounder Christopher Barnwell scuttle out the opposition with his swing and pace, national opener Rajendra Chandrika blazed his way to an unbeaten half-century which helped placed Leon Johnson’s XI in ascendancy position at the end of the second day of their four-day practice match against Vishaul Singh’s XI at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground yesterday.

Resuming on their overnight score of 16 without loss in response to Johnson’s XI first-innings score of 240, Singh’s XI were bowled out for 194 with Barnwell claiming 5 for 57, while there were two wickets each for Veerasammy Permaul and Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai.

Earlier in the day, Kandasammy Surujnarine and Tagenarine Chanderpaul resumed their innings on 2 and 9 respectively, and took the overnight score from 16 to 33, before Surujnarine, who was given a life the previous afternoon by Deonarine at slip off Paul Wintz, was caught at the wicket by Anthony Bramble, the first of Barnwell’s five victims.

Barnwell, the Demerara Cricket Club first division captain then removed Shimron Hetmyer (4) and Singh (0), while Wintz got the scalp of Chanderpaul for 26 that included four fours to leave the opposition on 50 for 4.

Ricardo Adams and Royston Crandon set about repairing the damage with their 29-run fifth-wicket partnership which was broken when Permaul removed Ricardo Adams for 20 (3×4) at 79 for 5 and soon after it was 87 for 7 following the quick demise of Jacobs (0) and Crandon.

At this stage, Jason Sinclair and Kemo Paul went about ‘Operation Recovery’ for their team by adding 85 for the eighth wicket, before Sinclair who topscored with 58 (8×4) was sent back by Motie-Kanhai at 165 for 8.

The innings folded shortly after for 194, with Paul being dismissed by Permaul for 37 (2×4, 1×6) while Motie-Kanhai wrapped things up with the wicket of Anthony Adams (02), leaving Amir Khan unbeaten on 12.

Motie-Kanhai had 2 for 28 and Permaul 2 for 34 in support to Barnwell, who later watched as Chandrika and Trevon Griffith (9) solidified their team’s lead by adding 33 for the first wicket before Griffith and Robin Bacchus (0) were both dismissed by Jacobs at 33.

However, Deonarine joined Chandrika and together they have so far added 40 for their unbroken third-wicket partnership, heading into today’s third day action which begins at 09:30hrs, with Johnson’s XI enjoying a healthy lead.

Georgetown, Guyana - Dependable West Indies middle-order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul struck his second half-century in the Cricket Guyana Inc. four-day practice match yesterday for Leon Johnson’s XI, to set up an interesting final day’s play against Vishaul Singh’s XI at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground.

Resuming the day on 73 for 2, with Rajendra Chandrika on 52 and Narsingh Deonarine 8, Johnson’s XI declared their second innings closed at 287 for 8 off 84.2 overs, when the 40-year-old Chanderpaul was trapped lbw by Anthony Adams, for a lead of 333.

Earlier in the day, Chandrika and Deonarine were not allowed to build on their overnight partnership which had accrued 40 runs at the close of play on the second day, as they only added 12 before Chandrika 55 (90 balls, 10×4) was caught by Shimron Hetmyer off Steven Jacobs who finished with 3 for 56.

Deonarine and Chandrapaul Hemraj pushed the score to 125, before Deonarine, who faced 97 balls and struck three fours in is 36, was dismissed and he was followed 12 runs later by Hemraj for 25, at 137 for 5.

The 40-year-old Chanderpaul’s innings spanned 121 balls and was decorated with five fours, including three sixes – two of them in one over off Adams – before he lost Foo and later added 47 for the eighth wicket with Anthony Bramble who made an unbeaten 38 (46 balls, 3×4, 1×6).

Johnson’s XI declared their second innings closed when Shivnarine Chanderpaul was lbw to Adams, but not before he struck Amir Khan for his third six. Georgetown, Guyana - Defending champions Albion Community Centre have become the first team to reach the final of this year’s Carib Beer First Division T20 cricket competition in the Ancient County of Berbice.

Romesh Boodram and former Berbice all-rounder Eon Abel did well to put on 25 for in four overs, but after that Guyana Under-19 off-spinner Balchand Baldeo and former West Indies left-arm spinner picked up two wickets each to leave them tottering at 42-4.

It soon became 42-5, a position from which did not improve much upon, and then struggled to 74-9 from the 20 overs with Boodram top scoring with 24. Bowling for Albion, Permaul took 3-14 from four overs, Baldeo 2-10 from four overs and Narsingh Deonarine 2-20, also from four overs.

Albion Community Centre, in their reply, was given a good start of 40 by openers, Guyana’s wicketkeeper/batsman Anthony Bramble and Berbice opening batsman Kandasammy Surujnarine, before Bramble fell to medium-pacer Navin Rampersaud for 21. Bramble now has 282 runs at an average of 70.5 in the competition.

Rampersaud picked up two more wickets; Deonarine for seven and former Guyana T20 batting sensation Jonathan Foo for five but by then it was too late as Albion coasted to 77-4 in 9.5 overs with Surujnarine steering them to victory with 38 not out.

The team to challenge Albion in the final for this year’s championship is expected to be known on Sunday with the staging of the semi-final between Young Warriors and Universal Solutions Bermine at Port Mourant.
