Georgetown, Guyana - In days gone by teams easily fielded teams in the Case Cup first division, Northcote Cup second division, Penta intermediate division and the Third Class tournament…all at the same time.
Those days are now gone and interest for the once glorious game is less than lukewarm even among those playing the game.
Yesterday, the opening day of the latest round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Hadi’s two-day first division competition was marred by two games not being played due the unavailability of players as clubs struggled to field teams.
At Camp Road, Transport Sports Club (TSC) got a walk over from Everest, while at Malteenoes the game between the hosts and DCC was cancelled because DCC, who are engaged in the second division semi-final against Police, could not put together a first division team.
The problem stemmed from the fact that the players in the Guyana Jaguars training squad were not allowed to play by Cricket Guyana Inc (CGI) due to their practice schedule. Everest was the heaviest hit by CGI’s decision.
In the only first division match played the Army and Police were locked in a tight battle for first innings points at Camp Ayanganna when bails were lifted on day one.
GDF were 83-3, 73 runs behind the 156 made by the Cops with seven wickets in hand. Police were given a solid 43-run start by Rawle Browne and Mark Persaud who both made 19, before 32-year-old Gilford Moore, who played five First-Class matches for CCC, trapped Browne LBW.
Daniel Barker who hammered four boundaries in 31 and former National youth players Shameer Fazal whose 26 included four fours and a six, put together 47 for the fourth wicket before Fazal was caught and bowled by Jeremiah Harris to leave Police on 98-4 after Lunch was taken 97-3.
Harris had 3-8, off-spinner Markus Watkins 3-7 and Moore 2-19 did the damage with the ball for the Soldiers who lost their first wicket on 38 when Colin McPherson (9) was taken at mid-off as pacer Seon Daniels made the breakthrough. Dameon Ross hit four fours in 30 before he fell at 61-2, while Randy Lindore (5) departed at 71-3. Watkins (18*) and Harris (9*) were the not out batmen when play ended in fading light.
