NCN in talks with ESPN over ICC Cricket World Cup coverage

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - The state owned National Communication Networks (NCN) yesterday said that they are currently in talks with rights holder ESPN, to air the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup which bowls off on Saturday February 14 in Australia.

Marketing Manager Raymond Azeez, speaking to Chronicle Sport yesterday, explained that unlike previous years when NCN had to simply deal with the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC), now, it’s complicated, since they have to negotiate with ESPN who only distribute to its cable partners.

ESPN’s partner in Guyana is E-Networks and Azeez said that NCN is trying everything in its power to ensure that the Walt Disney Company and Hearst Corporation owned entity breaks protocol to allow them the right to air the matches.

He said that it will cost the Government of Guyana owned station approximately US$30,000 to have to the event shown; almost three times what was paid for the 2011 tournament rights.

“We understand that they (ESPN) are dealing with their cable partner who in Guyana is E-Networks. We had first reached out to E-Networks who pointed us to ESPN and we’ve been in talks with them. It’s just a matter of them (ESPN) understanding that in Guyana, more than 60% of the population depend on us for events like this and not everyone has E-Networks” said Azeez.

Azeez pointed out that NCN remains committed to bring ball-by-ball coverage of the ICC showpiece, adding “We’re going to fight hard to get the rights. It’s only a couple of days left and so we’re waiting on ESPN to give a final word after making a proposal”

Crandon happy with Guyana Jaguars win

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Guyana Jaguars Head Coach Esaun Crandon is a happy man after his team’s convincing 105-run win Western Union logoin their fifth round West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional First-Class Franchise encounter against Jamaica last Monday at Sabina Park, their first win against Jamaica since the 51-run win at Chedwin Park in 2006.

The victory was more pleasing for the 33-year-old Crandon, who took 16 wickets in seven First-Class matches against Jamaica, since he opened the bowling with Reon King in that game at Chedwin Park in 2006.John Fernandes logo

“Twice I came here as Coach without any success so this is my first win against Jamaica as Coach and Guyana only beat Jamaica once when I was playing so I must commend the guys for a job well done,” said the former Guyana pacer, who played seven times against Jamaica since doing so for the first time in the 2003 Carib Beer Four-Day semi-final at Albion.

“This was the first that I can remember that we used a four-prong pace attack and the fast bowlers bowled 34 overs before spin was used and they all bowled well, in fact the seamers on both sides bowled well on this pitch which I think was a good cricket pitch,” said Crandon, who was in charge of the team which was beaten by seven wickets at Sabina Park last year and failed to win a single game in last year’s tournament.

“We scored over 300 runs in our first innings and when you do that you always put yourself in a good position to press for a win. Getting a big score in the first innings is also important for batting points,” Crandon explained.

Guyana got six bonus points for getting to 300 runs before 110 overs and taking 10 wickets in Jamaica’s first innings in addition to the 12 they got for their outright win to take them to 75 points and maintain their top of table position.

Although the Jaguars are well placed to lift their seventh Regional First-Class title and first since 1998 with five matches to go including their next match on Friday against the Leewards who occupy the cellar position, Crandon says there is still improvements to be made.

Coach Crandon (left) and members of his support staff, Rayon Griffith (2nd right) and Physio Paul Gomes (right) at Sabina Park in Jamaica.

“We are looking to work on improving all the time and are looking at the boxes that we have not ticked off as yet like our batsmen getting starts but not going on to really big scores. Also, while we dismissed Jamaica twice with almost two sessions to spare, we give them too many ‘four balls’ and we also need to do some work on our fielding,” Crandon pointed out.

“While our openers have not been at their best and our batsmen have not scored runs as a collective unit, everyone has stepped up when it mattered most to ensure that we got most of the highest totals in the competition,” said the right-arm pacer and left-handed batsman.

In 38 First-Class matches the Berbician scored one fifty and captured 90 wickets in a career that spanned a decade and ended with his last match against the Windwards in St Vincent in 2011 when he played in the same teams as current players, Rajendra Chandrika, Leon Johnson, Vishaul Singh, Veerasammy Permaul and Devendra Bishoo.

Now the Head Coach of a team including prolific Test batsman Shiv Chanderpaul, who has been playing at this level since he was a 16-year-old, Crandon is comfortable with his Job and says he is getting the full support of everyone.

“Shiv has been taking to the batsmen while (Assistant Coach/Manger) has been most helpful and would like to say that the addition to our squad of a physiotherapist (Paul Gomes) is going a long way in ensuring the guys remain injury free,” added Crandon.

Narsingh Deonarine and Devon Smith are the only batsmen with over 300 runs in the tournament, while left-arm spinner Permaul has the most wickets so far with 38 from five games.

Crandon informed that both Deonarine (flu) and Chandrika (Gastro) have recovered and will be available for Friday’s clash. The team left Jamaica yesterday and travelled to Trinidad en route to Antigua.

By CMC.

SYDNEY, Australia – Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd on Tuesday remembered Richard Austin as a “talented and fanatic cricketer and wonderful team man”.

Lloyd, the legendary captain of the 1970 and 1980s, captained Austin during his time in West Indies team. Austin a right-handed batsman and off-spinner, played two Tests and a single ODI.

He played 38 first-class matches making four centuries.

“He was a tremendous talent – a terrific cricketer and a very good footballer...a wonderful team man,” Lloyd told CMC Sports here.

“While he was in the team he did really well and made a very good contribution. He was also a fantastic footballer and played other sports as well.

Austin was a member of the West Indies team that played in World Series Cricket and one of the rebel players who toured South Africa in the early 1980s.

On his return to the Caribbean he fell on hard times and died last weekend in his native Jamaica at age 60.

“I first met him when he played for Jamaica and you could see his immense talent. He was very stylish and you could tell he would go on to play at the highest level,” the legendary former skipper said.

“He played Test cricket and World Series Cricket and he opened the batting and also batted in the middle, as well as bowled a bit of off-spin and was a very good fielder. He was a great utility man.”

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - As promised by Anil Beharry, the newly elected president of the Berbice Cricket Board and his executives, Under-15 Cricket Competition for Secondary Schools in Berbice will return after many years.

The sponsor is a friend of Berbice cricket and he is from the United States of America. His name is Dalchand Rambharose, a former resident of Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice and a keen follower of Berbice cricket.

In a message sent through his father who was present, Mr Deonarine Rambharose, he said he always had a keen interest in cricket in general with Berbice Cricket having a special place in his heart. The message added that he is always impressed with the work of the Berbice Board despite the limited resources. He added that the BCB is the shining light in an otherwise chaotic situation in Guyana and West Indies cricket. He blamed the International Cricket Council (ICC) for not intervening in Guyana’s cricket and resolve the issues.

Mr Deonarine Rambharose hands over sponsorship to Anil Beharry, President of the Berbice Cricket Board in the presence of Angela Haniff and Carl Moore.

He said that the ICC should have done the same as FIFA with football. He mentioned that he was closely following the BCB recently held election and had no doubt that Anil Beharry would have been the winner for he is the best man for the job. When he learned of the results and saw the promise made by Beharry, he thought that helping with the school cricket might be the best option.

Speaking on behalf of the BCB, the president thanked Mr Rambharose for sponsoring this important competition that was missing for so many years. He said that the nursery level is important so as to bring back interest to the youngsters and at the same time give the clubs an opportunity to do talent spotting. The board hopes that more international players will be born out of this tournament. He reminded that the school system in the past produced several outstanding cricketers. He added that the interest is high among teachers, parents and students for the ongoing A Ally and Sons Under-17 Schools Cricket Competition and said the Under-15 will be no different.  Special mention was made of Miss Volaika Jaikishun for supporting the idea and her ministry for approving the tournament.

Miss Jaikishun was present and said that physical fitness increases mental alertness and will surely help the kids to be more successful academically, provided they maintain the balance. She said the ministry will always support sports in schools for it helps with their discipline and gives them the opportunity to mix with others.

Lloyd says Windies can spring surprise

By CMC.

SYDNEY, Australia – Outstanding former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd has cautioned critics not to write of the Caribbean side’s World Cup chances just yet.

The Windies have been given little hope of winning cricket’s biggest prize, against the backdrop of their poor run of recent form and the number eight ranking in ODI cricket.

However, Lloyd argued that several underdogs – including the West Indies in the inaugural tournament in 1975 – had already won the World Cup, and said once the Caribbean side gelled their performances, they could pose a threat.

“When I see the players here, they must feel proud to be here. This is the showpiece of cricket. I want to see them happy, I want to see them go out there and give their all – blood and guts – because if they win this World Cup – I know a lot of people don’t give us a chance but you never know,” said Lloyd, who was at the helm when West Indies won in 1975 and again in 1979.

“We weren’t supposed to be winners in 1975, Pakistan were not supposed to be the winners in Melbourne [in 1992], India weren’t supposed to be the winners [in 1983] and they came out of a situation where Zimbabwe had them 80 or seven [in a group stage match] and Kapil Dev played a masterful innings.”

West Indies are coming off a 4-1 drubbing in a five-match series against South Africa, and also slumped to an embarrassing nine-wicket defeat to England in their first official warm-up match for the World Cup last Monday.

The side is also missing the likes of senior all-rounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, and is being led by new installed captain Jason Holder, himself a new-comer to international cricket.

Lloyd, the current chairman of selectors, said, however, West Indies could defy the pundits and produce good results.

“You never can tell. We have talented cricketers. If we can just get it together, we can give a good account of ourselves and surprise a lot of people,” he stressed.

West Indies face Scotland in their second warm-up game on Wednesday night before taking on Ireland next Monday in their opening group stage fixture at Saxton Oval in Nelson in New Zealand

They will also clash with the likes of defending champions India, South Africa, Pakistan and United Arab Emirates, in a tough Group B campaign.

WICB PCL Regional 4-Day Round 6 bulletin

WICB Media Release.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Guyana Jaguars and Barbados Pride, the two front-running sides in the WICB Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament, will be looking to forge further ahead in the sixth round of matches, starting on Friday.

With the season now halfway complete, the teams are now in the return leg of the Tournament and some will be looking to gain revenge on their opponents from the first leg of matches.

In North Sound, Antigua: Bottom-placed Leeward Islands Hurricanes will be hoping that home advantage will breed success for the first time this season, when they face chart-toppers Guyana Jaguars at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground.

This is definitely the tale of two extremes: The Hurricanes have failed to win a match this season, sinking to a heavy defeat against the Pride on the road in the previous round, when the Jaguars made a huge statement, gaining a significant boost of confidence with a solid victory over the Jamaica Franchise on the road.

So current form and recent history strongly favour the visitors, as the Jaguars, whose 13-member squad is unchanged, have won five of their previous 10 matches including in the first round of this season’s tournament.

The Hurricanes, whose side is also unchanged, can take comfort in the knowledge that the last time the two teams met at this venue early last year, they landed a five-wicket knock-out punch to the Jaguars.

In Bridgetown, Barbados: The Pride will be looking to collect their fourth straight victory and prove what a difference a format makes when they host long-standing arch-rivals Trinidad & Tobago Red Force at Kensington Oval.

Pride and Red Force were truly last season’s top two sides – the home team lifted the NAGICO Super50 title and followed up with the R4Day crown, while T&T finished in the runners-up spot in both competitions.

This season however, the Pride struggled in the NS50 which the full-strength Red Force won – and it has been vice versa in the R4Day with the embattled visitors find the going tough as their hosts have recovered strongly from weather setbacks early in the season.

Current form and recent history are also on the side of the Pride. They seemed destined to win their tournament opener against the Red Force, but the weather intervened and prevented them from clinching a sixth straight victory over this same opponent.

Both sides are unchanged from the previous round.

In Kingstown, St. Vincent: Judging on recent results, the most competitive contest of the round could emerge, when the Windward Islands Volcanoes meet the Jamaica Franchise at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex.

Volcanoes breathed life into their season with a resounding victory over the Red Force in the previous round, at the same time that the Franchisers stumbled when they were dominated by the Jaguars.

Both teams need all the points they could acquire to keep the two front-running sides within reach, so expect a keen affair.

This will be the first time the two sides will meet at Arnos Vale in 15 years, but recent history favours the visitors, since they have won nine of the 20 matches in the same period, including the first round encounter this season on home soil.

Windwards are unchanged, but the Franchisers are the only side this round to make an adjustment, bringing Brandon King in to replace Shacaya Thomas.
