Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Both Yound Warriors and Universal Solution Bermine won their final Zone B preliminary matches to end up as winners and runners-up respectively of that zone, earning the right to advance to the last playoffs of the 2014 Berbice Cricket Board/Carib Beer first division T20 competition.

Former Guyana and now Canada pacer Jeremy Gordon on a short visit home took 4 for 19 for Universal Solutions Bermine to help keep Police down to a manageable 130 for 6 in 20 overs, after a threatening opening stand of 81 in 13 overs between Brentnol Woolford (49, 3×4) and Albert Sinclair (28).

When Bermine replied, the accurate Police bowling attack had them shakily placed at 61 for 4 in the 10th over but Berbice all-rounder Devon Clements’ unbeaten 55 (3×4, 1×6) and former Demerara all-rounder Damien Vantull’s unbeaten 31 batted resolutely in the face of determined bowling to see Bermine home.

Young Warriors for their part restricted Edinburgh to 110 for 9 in their 20 overs thanks mainly to pacer Vishal Mohabir picking up 3 for 18, before Berbice batsman Seon Hetmyer scored 39 and his brother Shimron Hetmyer supported with 29 to see Warriors to a six-wicket victory with 7.1 overs to spare.

In Zone A, West Berbice made very light work of D’Edward to end up as winners of that zone with D’Edward as runners-up – both of them already earning the right to advance to the playoff round.

Led by Keith Fraser 57 (5×6, 3×4), West Berbice posted 173 for 7 in their 20 overs despite D’Edward’s Lakeraj Sookra picking up 5 for 23 (the best bowling figure in the competition so far) only to see his side reply with 74 in 16 overs, as Krishendat Ramoo and Steffon Adams snared 4 for 6 and 3 for 12 respectively.

Summarised scores:

At Albion, Universal Solutions Bermine beat Police by 6 wickets. Police, choosing to bat first, scored 130 for 6 in 20 overs with Brentnol Woolford 49 and Albert Sinclair 28. Jeremy Gordon took 4 for 19. Universal Solutions Bermine 132 for 4 in 19.2 overs with Devon Clements 55 not out and Damien Vantull 31 not out; Wayne Richards 2 for 24 and Kurt Griffith 2 for 27.

At Cumberland, Young Warriors beat Edinburgh by 6 wickets. Edinburgh, sent in to take first strike, made 110 for 9 with Joseph Giddings 32 and Shawn Baksh 29. Vishal Mohabir 3 for 18, Kevin Ramdeen 2 for 11 and Linden Austin 2 for 15 for Young Warriors, who scored 115 for 4 in 12.5 overs with Seon Hetmyer 39, Shimron Hetmyer 27 and Vishal Mohabir 25 not out, leading the batting as Zaheer Hussain took 3 for 26.

At D’Edward, West Berbice beat D’Edward by 99 runs, with West Berbice making 173 for 7 in 20 overs, thanks to Keith Fraser 57, Arthley Bailey 42, Steffon Adams 32. Lakeraj Sookra collected 5 for 24 and Christian France 2 for 19 for D’Edward, who in reply were bowled out for 74 in 16 overs with Lakeraj Sookra 22. Krishendat Ramoo took 3 for 6 and Steffon Adams 3 for 12.

At Blairmont, Bush Lot Rising Star beat Blairmont Community Centre by 3 runs. Permaul aiming for West Indies recall

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Left-arm spinner, Veerasammy Permaul, is eyeing a recall to the West Indies line-up. However, in order to get the attention of the West Indies selectors again, the highly rated spinner must first stamp his authority during the upcoming West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League’s (PCL) Regional Four-Day and NAGICO Super50 Tournaments, starting November14.

The 25-year-old, who is a part of the Guyana Jaguars 15-man squad, insists that once he bowls to his best and takes wickets regularly, he will have a good chance of catching the eyes of the selectors once more.

“Right now I’m concentrating hard on my bowling because I know all I need to do is to continue taking wickets. I just have to be consistent during the upcoming regional tournaments and once that has been achieved it’s up to the selectors,” Permaul said on Thursday during an exclusive interview with Guyana Times Sport.

Permaul, who played his last international game in December, last year, has been pushed down the pecking order by other spinners around the Region.

However, rather than rolling over and playing dead, Permaul is working feverishly to improve his game.

“I am training everyday in order to keep fit,” he said.

The spinner indicated that like most other cricketers he went through a bad patch, but remains confident of his return to the regional side.

Permaul has so far taken 12 wickets from four Tests and eight wickets in six ODIs. He has also claimed 26 T20 scalps.

Permaul has taken 240 wickets from 64 First-Class games, snaring nine 10-wicket hauls, and 10 in one match. He has also claimed 59 wickets in 43 List A games.

The talented spinner is among the retained players chosen by the local franchise. The other retained players for Guyana are: Devendra Bishoo, Narsingh Deonarine, Assad Fudadin, Leon Johnson, Christopher Barnwell, Ronsford Beaton, Anthony Bramble, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Trevon Griffith.

Barbadian all-rounder Raymond Reifer, along with Guyanese opening batsman Rajendra Chandrika, middle-order batsman Vishaul Singh and fast bowlers Keon Joseph and Paul Wintz complete the Guyana Franchise.

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Anand Kalladeen, former treasurer of the East Bank Demerara Cricket Association (EBDCA), was recently elected to serve as that entity’s new president for the forthcoming year 2014/15 when that entity held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, September 30, at the Providence Community Centre.

Kalladeen replaces the long-serving Rohan Sarjoo who has served out his five consecutive years at the helm.

The Constitution of the EBDCA restricts the president and the treasurer from holding office for more than five consecutive years, but with his excellent service given in the presidency seat, the electorates voted for Sarjoo to return as one of two vice-presidents to Kalladeen, with Johnny Azeez as the other.

Mohamed Baksh will serve as secretary, while Sewnarine Kallicharran, Rakesh Seagram and Eric Sukrah will execute the offices of treasurer, assistant secretary and assistant treasurer respectively.

Alvin Rambarran, Ronald Jaisingh, K. Barker, Jermaine Ramroop and Julian Mohabir are the committee members while as Rakesh Gangaram has been tasked with the duties of organising competitions for the EBDCA, who also has Demerara Cricket Board president Raj Singh as its Marketing Manager.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) is John Ramsingh and following the first executive meeting that was held two days after being elected, several sub-committees were named and are as follows:

Marketing and Fundraising will be headed by Raj Singh, with assistance from Sarjoo, Kallicharran and Azeez, even as Kalladeen and Rambarran will be responsible for discipline while Kalladeen, Rohan Sarjoo, Julian Mohabir and Rambarran will take charge of the Cricket Development Committee of the EBDCA.

The two selectors on board with the DCB are Azeez at the senior level and Sarjoo at the junior level with Barker and Gangaram as the alternates for both categories.

BCB pays tribute to the late Johashen

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - The Berbice Cricket Board, on behalf of its member clubs and cricket-loving Berbicians, wishes to express its deepest sorrow at the passing of a cricket stalwart, Vibert Johashen, a pacer who represented Berbice and Guyana at the first class level.

Vibert successfully played for Berbice from 1973 to 1978 and was always a thorn in the sides of many established Demerara batsmen, opening the bowling at different times with Keith Cameron and Leslaine Lambert.

In the Jones Cup final in 1977 at Bourda against Demerara, picked up 2 for 73 in the first innings when Keith Cameron took 7 for 60 and then in the second innings, he snared 5 for 43, including the wickets of Stephen Camacho, Stephen Bamfield and Andrew Lyght to bowl Berbice to a memorable 161-run victory and the Cup.

He also played three four-day matches for Guyana in 1977 and 1978 including one against the touring full-strength Pakistan team and took 4 for 84 in their first innings including the scalps of the greats, Majid Khan, Mudassar Nazar and Wasim Raja. He was also a capable lower order batsman who supported the established batsmen on many occasions.

At the first division level, Vibert played for Demerara Police and then remigrating to Berbice – Mental Hospital and Guymine – where he gained employment.

Although he was a “gentle giant” off the field and a real gentleman, the minute he crossed the boundary, he was a fierce competitor, becoming ruthless against his opponents and very uncompromising with his teammates particularly if they misfielded or dropped catches off his bowling.

There is a famous story that is now cricket folklore about an incident involving the-then Police captain William Jeffrey, Johashen and former Commissioner of Police Balram Raghubir who was fielding at the time,

Vibert will be fondly remembered for his exploits, having made his mark in the annals of Berbice cricket and even after his cricketing days, he always showed a keen interest in Berbice cricket even though he was residing in Demerara.

The greatest tribute that can be paid to Vibert Johashen would be that the youngsters of today emulate his commitment and zeal for the game.

We will all miss you, Vibert.

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Transport Sport Club’s Ryan Hemraj and Georgetown Cricket Club’s Martin Pestano-Belle were the first two batsmen to chalk up centuries when action in the third annual Georgetown Cricket Association/New Building Society second division 40 overs competition bowled off yesterday.

Hemraj scored 124 to steer TSC to 283 for 9, to which GCC replied with 223 for 9 innings closed, despite Pestano-Belle’s 101, when the two sides clashed at the Muslim Youth Organization ground, even as Demerara Cricket Club, Everest Cricket Club and Guyana National Industrial Corporation recorded first round wins.

At MYO< TSC batting first saw Hemraj and Charwayne McPherson posting over 100 for the first wicket, with Hemraj hitting 13 fours and nine sixes in his 124, while McPherson struck five fours and one six in his 46.

Sunil Singh offered support, hitting six fours in his 37 while Azim Azeez struck three four sin his 21, as skipper Devon Lord took 3 for 53 before departing to attend a wedding, Samuel McKenzie 2 for 14 and Dellon Fernandes 2 for 44.

When GCC batted after being forced to do so without the services of Lord, only Pestano-Belle with his 101 that included 14 fours and one six and Bernard Bailey 52 with nine fours, offered resistance to TSC’s birthday boy Joel Spooner, who celebrated his 14th birthday by claiming 3 for 26 to bowl his side to a 60 runs victory.

At the DCC ground in Queenstown, rain reduced that encounter to 28 overs a side, to which MSC won the toss and asked their host to take first strike, bowling them out for 144 in 26.4 overs.

Ryan Hemraj

Shurfane Rutherford led the batting with 33 (4×4, 2×6), Dennis Squires supported with 27 (3×6, 2×4) and Renaldo Renee made 21 (3×4, 1×6) as Delon Darymple took 4 for 48, Vishal Narayan 2 for 10 and Shaquille Moseley 2 for 18 for MSC.

In their turn at the wicket, the visitors were bowled out for 96 in 18.2 overs, after being forced to contend with the pace of Rutherford from one end and an all spin attack which was led by national Under-15 left arm spinner Ashmead Nedd who took 4 for 11.

Moseley topscored with 22 (2×6, 1×4) after being struck in the chest region by Rutherford, who later took two catches in the deep to back his performance with the bat, while Keifer Naughton supported him with 13 (3×4).

No other MSC batsman could come to terms with the guile of Nedd and Squires who ended with 2 for 28, as DCC completed the win by 48 runs.

At GNIC, Ace Warriors made a return to competitive action after two years and were bowled out for 128 by Everest Cricket Club, who in reply raced to 130 for 4 inside 17.2 overs to win by six wickets.

Romario Nepal topscored with 25 (5×4), Keyron George made 24 (3×4, 1×6), Dellon Azore 13 (2×4) and skipper Afzal Gafoor 12 (2×4) for Ace Warriors, as K. Ramdeen took 5 for 33, R. Sattaur 3 for 26 and Javed Rasheed 2 for 22 for Everest who in reply saw Bhola hitting 11 fours and two sixes in his 58 and Ramdeen seven fours in his 43 as they reached their target, despite Azore’s 3 for 17.

Martin Pestano Belle

At the Police Sports Club ground, Christian Husbands’ 5 for 42, which was complemented by Orlando Kirton’s 3 for 42 and T. Thompson 2 for 37, enabled GNIC to bowl out the home team for 197 off 39.3 overs.

K. Griffith topscored with 40 (3×4, 2×6), Rawle Enmore, formerly of TSC and Ace Warriors, supported with 32 that included four fours, J. McAlmont made 25 (2×4) and Trevor Benn 22 (2×6, 1×4) for PSC, who saw GNIC on the back of Quincy Ovid Richardson’s unbeaten 73 (5×4, 1×6) reached 200 for 8 in reply.

Stephon Campbell supported Richardson with his 32 (2×4) while Jason George got 26 against the bowling of Benn, who took 3 for 23 and Vishal Jaigobin’s 2 for 28.

Action in this tournament continues today with Ace Warriors taking on GNIC at GNIC, with Zaheer Mohamed and Clyde Layne doing on-field duties; UG will travel to MYO under the watchful eyes of Chetram Persaud and Joseph Jeffrey, and Sophia will take on Diplomats at UG, with Ryan Banwarie and Deon Feassal umpiring.

GCA’s Hadi first division two-day cricket …Nanan (7-35), Sookdeo (94*) put GCC in command

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Left-arm spinner Raj Nanan snatched 7-35 from 13.4 overs, his fourth five-wicket haul in three games for the season, to destroy GYO at Bourda, while First-Class player Chanderpaul Hemraj’s 51 ensured hosts Everest batted all day against Police despite failures by both Shiv Chanderpaul (14) and his son Tagenarine (10) yesterday on the first day of the latest round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Hadi’s first division two-day cricket tournament.

The 21-year-old Nanan befuddled the batsmen on a flat track as GYO slumped to 82, their third consecutive double digit total in the competition before National opener Robin Bacchus, who hit eight fours and a six in 57 and Jeetendra Sookdeo, who hammered eight fours and a six in an undefeated 94, shared in a 125-run opening stand to give the Bourda boys a lead of 115 runs going into today’s final day.

GCC were 197-2 in reply to the paltry 82 made by GYO, while Everest reached 219-8 against Police by the close yesterday.

At Bourda, GYO won the toss after early morning showers delayed the start by 105 minutes and by Lunch had reached 39-1 from nine overs.  In glorious sunshine under a clear blue sky Nanan, who opened the bowling, trapped Gordon Best for a duck with just a run on the board.

Tretlon Liverpool joined Abdool Raheem and got going by caressing Nanan for four elegant off-side boundaries before lunch as Raheem was content to play the supporting role as Nanan bowled much too flat and fast for a two-innings match.

GYO’s Skipper Surendra Herilall is about to be caught & bowled by Raj Nanan.

After the interval, Raheem and Tretlon Liverpool carried the score to 53 before Nanan broke the 52-run partnership by removing Liverpool for 29 decorated with five fours.

After Nanan got rid of Raheem for 18 at 57-3 and off-spinner Gavin Singh sent back Raj Simboo for a duck at 61-4 no other batsman passed one except Skipper Surendra Herilall (18) who was just beginning to look settled before he lost his concentration and his wicket by skying Nanan ‘miles’ into the air for the bowler to take the catch off his own bowling.

GYO, the weakest team in the competition, were bowled out for 38 by DCC last weekend and yesterday in ideal batting conditions, the Woolford Avenue side capitulated from 53-1 to 82 all out; losing nine wickets for 31 runs as five batmen made ducks and another three managed just one.

Gavin Singh supported Nanan with 3-21 for GCC, while Skipper and National left-handed batsman Vishaul Singh, Wicketkeeping for only the second time at first division level, looked quite competent behind the stumps.

When GCC began their reply in sultry conditions, Bacchus and fellow left-hander Sookdeo give their team a solid foundation taking them to Tea at 53 without loss.

After Tea Bacchus top-edged an impetuous sweep at Mark Hamilton and skied a catch to the keeper before Divesh Ramjattan, operating with an unusual action, deceived Elon Fernandes (3) and had him caught and bowled at 130-2.

Sookdeo remained to the close and had as his partner Vishaul Singh unbeaten on 42 with four boundaries.

At Camp Road, in another rain affected game which began 60 minutes late, Everest reached 49-2 by Lunch after the lively Darsen LaRose made the breakthrough by inducing Tagenarine Chanderpaul to chop one onto his stumps at 11-1.

After the interval Everest lost four more wickets including left-handed Test player Shiv Chanderpaul, who was bowled off the inside by Jason Heyliger. Last round’s centurion Joseph Perry (24) and Rajendra Chandrika (20) also departed in sweltering heat as Everest slipped to 167-6 by Tea.

Troy Gonsalves (41) and Guyana player Zaheer Mohamed (11) fell soon after Tea before Raphael Singh (17*) and Chris Surat (16*) stayed together to the end of the day’s play as Heyliger has picked up three wickets so far.

Today is the final day and the action is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.

At a simple ceremony at its Vlissengen Road branch on Saturday morning, the Assistant Manager of Survival Travel Agency, Mark DeFreitas, presented the two tickets to members of the Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA), the organising body of the October 31 to November 2 competition.

DeFreitas said Survival is proud to once again be associated with the tournament, which has attracted teams from Guyana and North America competing in the Open and Masters categories.

Receiving on behalf of the GFSCA was Rohan Booj-Raj, who expressed gratitude to the entity for staying the course with the Guyana Softball Cup. Booj-Raj said the investment by Survival is significant, noting that such strong support is vital to the success of the tournament.

To qualify for a chance to win the trip to Aruba, spectators need to retain their half tickets on the day of the finals and listen for their numbers to be called over the Public Address system.

Success story

The Guyana Softball Cup commenced in 2011 and instantly became a hit with players and fans alike, attracting massive crowds and also putting some hard earned cash in the pockets of those who entertain with bat and ball on the field.

This year promises to be even better, as the GFSCA is aiming to surpass the achievements of the previous three years in terms of spectators’ involvement and the handsome rewards at stake for the players.

The champion team in the Men’s Open is guaranteed a whopping $800,000 first prize and a huge trophy, while the losing finalist will have to settle for $200,000 and a trophy. In the Masters’ division, the winning team will pocket $600,000 with the runner-up assured of $150,000. The Man-of-the-Match in both finals will receive a trophy.

As has been the case in the past, the Most Valuable Player of each category will become the proud owner of a softball bracelet, made of gold and diamond studs, compliments of Steve’s Jewellery.

On the day of the final, apart from the trip to Aruba, there will be lots of hampers and giveaways for spectators.

Two dozen teams will compete in this year’s event, with 12 from Guyana, seven from New York, three from Florida and two from Canada. During the three-day championship, there will be a total of 36 preliminary games, followed by four semi-finals and two finals.

In an effort to expand the reach of the competition and ensure maximum participation from spectators, the organisers have increased the number of venues this year. Grounds earmarked to host games are Police Sports Club, Everest Cricket Club, Georgetown Cricket Club, Demerara Cricket Club, Ghandi Youth Organisation, Muslim Youth Organisation, Enmore Community Centre and Enterprise Busta Sports Club.

Trophy Stall and New York Better are the defending champions of the Open and Masters categories respectively, while the previous champions were NYSCL New York (Open) and Savage Masters in 2012 and Cotton Field Wild Oats (Open) and Regal Seniors (Masters) in 2011.

According to information emanating from the GFSCA, this year’s tournament has an estimated budget of around $10 million.
