Legend Lance Gibbs set to join 80 club

The Trinidad Express article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Lance Gibbs celebrates his 80th birthday tomorrow, joining 15 West Indies Test players to have reached the chronological landmark.

None of those who have survived into their eighth decade played as many Tests as Gibbs’ 79 Tests or longer than his 18 years. He was the second bowler, after England’s fast bowler, Fred Trueman, to 300 Test wickets – his final count when he played his last Test in Australia in 1976 - was 307.

Tall, slim and fit enough to wheel away his sharply spun off-breaks for hour after hour, Gibbs was a ferocious competitor. Team mates jibed that if he was a fast bowler, he would have been a grave danger to batsmen.

Resident in Florida for over 30 years, he remains involved in West Indies cricket as consultant to sponsors, Digicel.

The other Test over-80s still alive are:

Andy Ganteaume, 93 (one Test, 1948); Roy Miller, 89 (one Test, 1953); Sir Everton Weekes, 89 (48 Tests, 1948-58); Alfie Binns, 85 (five Tests, 1953-56); Joe Solomon, 84 (27 Tests, 1958-65); Bruce Pairaudeau, 83 (13 Tests, 1953-57); Cammie Smith, 81 (five Tests, 1960-62); Basil Butcher, 81 (44 Tests, 1958-69); Tom Dewdney, 80 (nine Tests, 1955-58); Seymour Nurse, 80 (29 Tests, 1960-69); Jackie Hendriks, 80 (20 Tests, 1962-69); Hammond Furlonge, 80 (three Tests, 1955-56); Willie Rodriguez, 80 (five Tests, 1962-68); Alfred Scott, 80 (one Test, 1953); Reg Scarlett, 80 (three Tests, 1960).

GCA Hadi’s two-day cricket …Sankar grabs career best 8-71 but Nanan’s 5-10 ensure MSC follow-on

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Under a clear blue sky on a two-paced track with variable bounce at the Malteenoes ground yesterday, Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ended the first day of the latest round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) two-day Hadi’s division one cricket competition, in a commanding position against the home team, who have been asked to follow-on.

A career best 8-71 from National under-19 leg-spinner Steven Sankar helped to dismiss GCC for 224 on the stroke of Tea but by the close Demerara left-arm spinner Raj Nanan had taken 5-10 and received good support from pacer Joshua Wade (3-26) and Robin Bacchus (2-30) as Malteenoes, set 124 to avoid the follow-on, tumbled for 107 as only Skipper Steven Jacobs offered any resistance with a fighting 37 with six fours.

GCC won the toss after the contest began 10 minutes late because of smoke emanated from the neighbouring Transport Sports Club ground due to the burning of bushes. They lost Bacchus (5) LBW to young fast bowler Darren Best at 21-1 and one run later it was 22-2 when Deonarine Seegobin (1) was removed by Kellon Carmichael. Elon Fernandes (22) was then LBW to Sankar after he and Martin Pestano-Bell had taken the score to 66-3.

Leg-spinner Steven Sankar bowls during his career-best 8-71 against GCC at MSC yesterday.

Gavin Singh (25) and National youth player Renaldo Ali Mohamed, who hit five fours and two sixes in a confident 49, revived the position somewhat before Nanan, who hit three fours in well constructed 36 was bowled with a ball that kept low from Sankar, who utilized the under-prepared pitch to rip out the next three wickets to leave the Bourda boys on 220-9.

The resistance from Pestano-Bell, who was forced to ‘retire hurt’ after being hit on the glove by a good length delivery that ‘kicked’ ended when he was last out three short of his fifty after hitting six fours and a six as Sankar wrapped up the innings in quick time.

Maleenose began their reply with a cool breeze ruffling the branches of the palm trees surrounding the venue and stared in disastrous fashion when First-Class opener Shemroy Barrington failed to control a ball that lifted off a good length off wade before he had scored. Four runs later it was 7-2 when Wade bowled Floyd Rollins for five.

Kareem Naughton was then bowled by Bacchus for seven at 26-3 before Jacobs and Carmichael took the score 52 when Carmichael (12) was trapped LBW to Wade and when Keffa Naughton (5) got one from Bacchus that scuttled through and was struck in front, the Thomas Lands unit had slumped to 57-5.

Jacobs whose first four scoring shots were all boundaries off Bacchus, was joined by Racquel Green (12) and together they took the score to 79 before Green was adjudged LBW off the inside edge. When Jacobs played back to one that shot through from Nanan was bowled at 89-7 Maleenose were in tatters in the own back yard.

Cordell Mars clobbered two sixes in his 13 but Nanan quickly got rid of Sankar (2), Best (0) and Mars, minutes before the close, to leave the hosts 17 short of the follow on target. The final day is scheduled to start at 10:00hrs today.

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Cricket Guy Inc, the company formed to oversee the day-to-day affairs of the Guyana franchise under the new system soon to be introduced in West Indies cricket has not yet decided if the local franchise will be keeping it all local for the new season.

Under this system each of the territorial boards will be allowed to retain their top 10 players while another 15 players from each country will be put into a draft, which means that there will be 90 players available for teams to choose five to add to their squad.

However, in an invited comment on Saturday, Chairman of the Senior Selection Panel of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Rayon Griffith, disclosed that the players’ pool will decide the make-up of the local franchise.

“Actually we have already identified the 10 players, but we will decide on the other five at the draft. I can’t say at the moment if we will go all local or not, it will depend on the pool of players available,” Griffith, who will represent Cricket Guy Inc. at the draft, said. Griffith, however, was reluctant to release the names of the 10 players.

The players draft will take place in Barbados sometime this week.

The WICB from October 1 will roll out a full Professional First-Class Franchise System in which a cadre of 90 players will be engaged in a professional cricket structure on a day-to-day basis, year round.

The Board has committed to partner with the six territorial boards to fund six First-Class Franchises in the region, which will compete in the annual Regional First-Class and Super50 tournaments.

Each franchise will retain 15 players, who will work as a unit on a day-to-day basis in each territory under a Head Coach and support staff. The six franchises will be based in Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago and Windward Islands.

Each of the six franchises will be given US$45,000 per month to fund their operations.

Further player will be categories into three levels, A, B and C with the first carrying a price tag of USD $2,500, the second USD $1,700 and third USD $1,250, based on the category the player may fall within.

SCA Premier League Chattergoon slams 217 as HACC reach fifth final

Guyana Chronicle article.

TORONTO, Canada – Led by a scintillating unbeaten 217 by former Guyana and West Indies Under-19 batsman Hemnarine Chattergoon, Hawaiin Arctic Cricket Club (HACC) moved one step closer to retaining supremacy in the Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) Premier League tournament which was set to climax here yesterday.

Chattergoon’s knock and another responsible innings of 65 by opener Reyaz Prahalad saw HACC romp to 355 for seven in their allotted 50 overs after being inserted by Bawa XI in their semi-final encounter, played at the Ashtonbee ground here on Saturday before a large and enthusiastic crowd. Bawa X1 could muster only 199 all out in 43 overs, losing by the large margin of 136 runs.

The elder of the Chattergoon siblings, who was once touted as a future West Indies player before migrating here, was in sublime form on a Summer-like day here as he delighted his many fans with an array of exciting strokes to all parts of the Ashtonbee ground, slamming 28 fours and three sixes while facing 157 deliveries.

The right-handed Chattergoon, who had set tongues wagging with a brilliant century for the West Indies Under-19 team against Pakistan at the Kensington Oval in Barbados before migrating here, was having an average season prior to Saturday’s knock with just one half century to his credit.

Entering the fray with the departure of his brother Harrinarine (13) and HACC 35 for one, the HACC skipper was in a no-nonsense mood, pulverising the Bawa X1 attack while adding 184 for the second wicket with the reliable Prahalad whose innings counted three fours and a six.

Bawa X1 were never in the hunt despite a robust 85 from opener Shabbiz which included seven sixes and four fours as left-am medium pacer Ravi Bodhoo grabbed three for 33 and spinner Mahadeo Moonasar two for 34.

HACC also made light work of Kokuvil in their quarter-final match-up, played the previous Saturday. Led by consistent knocks from Zaheer Allard (45), Harrinarine Chattergoon (42), Prahalad (40), the four-time defending champions reached 268 for nine in their 50 overs.

Kokuvil were skittled for 117 in 29 overs, going down by 151 runs. Mahadeo starred with six for 37 and Hemnarine Chattergoon took two for 32.

HACC are seeking an unprecedented fifth consecutive title and were down to face East West Cricket Club at the same venue yesterday.

Foo’s hundred propels Albion to semi-finals

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - A superb unbeaten hundred by hard hitting batsman Jonathan Foo and supporting all-round performance by Veerapen Permaul helped Albion register a massive 222-run win over GUYTRAC Upper Corentyne to book their place in the semi-final of the 2014 Berbice Bridge Company Inc (BBCI) First Division 50-over knock-out cricket competition in Berbice.

In their second round game Saturday played at the Albion Community Centre, defending champs Albion won the toss and batted first and were given a start of 31 runs in six overs, helpped by Guyana’s wicket-keeper batsman Anthony Bramble, who fell for 12.

West Indies test batsman Narsingh Deonarine joined Kandasammy Surujnarine and together they proceeded to add 138 for the second wicket in just 12.2 overs before Surujnarine fell for 88 (6 fours, 1 six).

Deonarine fell for 79 (8 fours) at 203 for 3 in 36 overs.

Former Guyana T20 batting star Jonathan Foo then took things into his own hand and added a further 98 with Permaul before the latter’s innings, with six boundaries in 51, came to an end, with two overs still to be bowled.

Foo ensured that a further 42 runs were scored in the remaining overs to see his team finishing on 343-4, himself ending not out on 103 (6 fours, 4 sixes).

When GUYTRAC Upper Corentyne began their uphill task, they lost early wickets to off-spinner Permaul and never recovered enough to make a serious run for the target. They were eventually bowled out for just 121 in 32 overs, with Devindra Budhoo contributing 28 and Latchman Roopchand 27.

Bowling for Albion, Permaul took 3 for 18 from 10 overs, while Berbice left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie grabbed 3 for 34 from 6.5 overs. Guyana Under-19 off-spinner Sharaz Ramcharran took 2 for 13 from 5 overs.

GCA Hadi’s two-day cricket…GCC crush MSC by 10 wickets

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Kellon Carmichael was the only batsman on either side to reach 50 on a treacherous Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) track which made batting an adventurous expedition over the weekend as Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) crushed the hosts by 10 wickets in the latest round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Hadi’s two-day first division competition.

Left-arm spinner Raj Nanan, who took 5-10 and 8-29 for GCC; Leg-spinner Steven Sankar, who captured 8-91, utilized the pitch on which one ball bounced alarmingly and next kept low, to dominate the contest which ended yesterday just after lunch.

The 25-year-old Carmichael led from the front with an attacking unbeaten 73 with six sixes and five fours from 57balls and rallied MSC, following-on with a deficit of 117 runs, to 165 all out, four overs after Lunch.

Caribbean Champions League (CPL) selectee Robin Bacchus had Martin Bell-Pestano (5) as his silent partner as he plundered seven fours and a six in a pugnacious undefeated 41 as GCC set 49 to win, galloped to 50 without loss from just 8.2 overs under a cloudless sky in scorching heat.

MSC, who were asked to follow-on after being bowled out for 107 in reply to GCC’s 224, began their second innings yesterday and National opener Shemroy Barrington took the fight to the GCC bowlers, hitting four fours and a six in an explosive 33 from 25 balls to dominate the 53-run first wicket partnership with Floyd Rollins (10) before the 22-year-old Nanan had Barrington caught and bowled.

Former West Indies youth team Skipper and Guyana Amazon Warriors all-rounder Steven Jacobs (6) fell to Renaldo Ali Mohamed who also accounted for Rollins to start the ‘Raj Nanan demolition mission’ and slimly built spinner spun webs around the batsmen to capture all of the remaining wickets.

By Lunch Nanan had removed Racquel Green (3), Sankar, who clobbered two sixes and a four in a cameo 20 before he gave his wicket away with Carmichael well set at the other end, and Keffa Naughton (0) to leave Malteenoes on 151-7, with the Skipper on 59.

Carmichael who played an array audacious shots on the fast outfield, thumped Bacchus for a couple of back-to-back sixes before he watched in disbelief from the non-striker’s end as Nanan ploughed through the last four batsmen before any of them had scored. The last five wickets tumbled for just 14 runs.

Nanan captured his career best figures at first division level from 13 overs and finished with matches figures of 13- 39. He got support from Ali-Mohamed (2-23) to provide GCC, who has produced 14 Test players, the most by any Guyanese club, with an emphatic victory.

Georgetown, Guyana - Indebted to two half-centuries from openers Trevon Griffith and Brian Sattaur, the Christopher Barnwell-led Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) lineup overpowered a Robin Bacchus-led Rest Team by 88 runs in a specially-organised T20 clash at the DCC ground last Sunday night.

The contest was organised to celebrate the birth anniversary of the Club’s head coach Garvin Nedd. Winning the toss and deciding to take first strike in the presence of a mammoth crowd, DCC accrued 271 for 6 from their 20 overs.

The 23-year-old Griffith, who last week scored his maiden Inter-county ton in the Guyana Cricket Board senior Inter-county tournament, led the way with a belligerent 86 (6×6, 4×4) while Sattaur slammed seven sixes and four fours in his 59, as the duo posted in excess of 100 for the first wicket.

Barnwell also chipped in with the bat, hitting five fours and two sixes in his robust 40, as Teralph Scipio led the Rest Team’s bowling with 3 for 48, before they closed their innings on 183 for 8 after 18 overs, in reply.

Dexter ‘Skip’ Williams took the attack to the DCC bowlers in retaliation of the runs struck off him when the home team batted, by hitting six fours and one six in his topscore of 43 for the Rest Team, before he was the last wicket to fall, caught and bowled by Griffith.

Bacchus scored 36 (6×4), Kwame Crosse 31 (3×4, 1×6) and Shemroy Barrington and Kemo Paul 18 each for the Rest Team who found the task of scoring 272 to win, a huge one to accomplish as Antonell Atwell took 2 for 24, while Griffith and Travis Dowlin each took  2 for 25..

Georgetown, Guyana - Fresh from his exploits in the recent Test series against Bangladesh, veteran West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul is expected to join the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Developmental XI line-up for the third and final round of the Senior Inter-County four-day tournament, beginning today.

The GCB Developmental XI will play Berbice at the Wales Community Centre Ground.

Chanderpaul, 40, has returned to the top three of the ICC Ranking for Test batsmen following his outstanding performance against Bangladesh.

The Guyanese is the second highest run-getter with 270 runs in the series, and as a result, he jumped two places.

He has leapfrogged David Warner of Australia and Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka into third position.

The batting table is headed by Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka, who leads South Africa’s AB de Villiers by 27 ratings points.

During the series, Chanderpaul became the second batsman – with a minimum qualification of three innings and 200-plus runs – to remain unbeaten in a Test series. He scored 270 runs from three innings without being dismissed. South Africa’s Jacques Kallis was the first batsman to achieve the feat.

Chanderpaul also became the 11th batsman to score 30 Test hundreds. Among left-handed batsmen, only two others have more centuries – Sangakkara with 37 and West Indian Brian Lara with 34.

The former captain, who has played a West Indian record of 158 Test matches, moved to 11, 684 career runs, just 269 runs away from eclipsing Lara’s West Indian record of 11, 953.

The Developmental XI manager David Black said: “Shiv is in exceptional form at the moment and once he is around, he will provide valuable middle-order support while demonstrating what it takes to be a world-class batsman to some of our younger players.”

Meanwhile, after two rounds, Demerara top the points standing with 28 points, while Berbice have 22 points; the Developmental XI, 17 points; and Essequibo at the bottom of the table on seven points.

In the other third round game, Demerara will play Essequibo at the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground.

Bramble, Crandon hit tons for Berbice

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Following centuries from national wicketkeeper/batsman Anthony Bramble and middle-order batsman Royston Crandon, Berbice were rescued from a perilous position to a formidable one at the end of the first day’s play in their final round Guyana Cricket Board senior Inter-county four-day matchup against the GCB Developmental XI at the Wales Community Centre ground.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first in brilliant sunshine in the contest which began 30 minutes late due to the late preparation of the pitch, Berbice slipped from 70 without loss to 89 for 5, before Crandon and Bramble joined forces and rescued their team.

As fast bowler Kemo Paul makes his way back to his mark and with wicketkeeper Kemol Savory (left) and his teammate Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai looking on admirably, Anthony Bramble (right) salutes the crowd after reaching 150.

The duo batted for the entire pre-tea session and 20 minutes after, during which time they added 216 for the sixth wicket, with both batsmen mixing sound aggression with the same level of defence, while posting their individual centuries in the process before being separated, with Crandon making 121 and Bramble 160 to rescue Berbice.

Things started brightly for Berbice, when Seon Hetmyer 40 (7×4) struck Chandrapaul Hemraj for two fours in the second over, after seeing his opening partner Kandasammy Surujnarine 31 (5×4) being given a life in the first over when he was caught by Steven Jacobs at slip, off the lively Kemo Paul, only to see the outstretched arm of the umpire indicating a no-ball.

That was the lone moment for the Developmental XI lineup within the first 90 minutes of the contest, until Shiraz Ramcharran (4 for 126) got Surujnarine to pop up one to Shivnarine Chanderpaul at extra cover at 70 for 1.

From that position, Berbice slipped to 89 for 5, losing Hetmyer, Devon Clements (1)< skipper Narsingh Deonarine (2) and Jonathan Foo whose struggle with the bat in this format of the game continues, as he managed 1, before he was lbw to Steven Sankar (3 for 92) who, in tandem with Ramcharran, ripped through the Ancient County’s top order.

At lunch, Berbice were 106 for 5 with Crandon on 7 which included a six that was struck back over the head of Sankar, and Bramble 8, inclusive of two fours struck off Ramcharran, his Albion Cricket Club teammate.

After the break, Bramble took a liking to Ramcharran, hitting him twice for a hat-trick of fours, posting his first 50 from 45 balls with nine fours while batting for 49 minutes, then watched as Crandon got to his 50 one over later off 56 balls, counting four fours and one six during his 64-minute stay at the wicket.

Crandon then went into over-drive, rattling off boundaries at will, hitting Sankar for another six, his third to move into the 90s, while Bramble got there shortly after with two fours in the following over bowled by Yatesh Dhanpaul.

Crandon was the first to post his century, doing so off 113 balls with six fours and three sixes while batting for 130 minutes and celebrated with his fourth six off Dhanpaul, followed by an authoritative drive through the covers, as Berbice took the tea break on 292 for 5 off 69 overs.

Royston Crandon of Berbice acknowledges the applause of his teammates, after posting his century against the GCB Developmental XI at Wales yesterday. Partly hidden is Anthony Bramble.

At tea, Crandon was on 112 and Bramble 98, the duo adding 186 runs for the sixth wicket without much trouble from the Developmental XI’s bowling line, while Bramble got his century in the second over after tea, following a halt in play as the scorers objected to executing their work after not being given a meal.

Bramble’s century was scored off 103 balls and included 16 fours while he batted for 136 minutes, before he lost Crandon, shortly after, caught by Tagenarine Chanderpaul off Ramcharran for 121, as he batted for 151 minutes, faced 128 balls and struck eight fours and four sixes in the process.

Bramble was on 102 when Crandon departed and together with Veerasammy Permaul 24 (4×4) pushed the score to 350 and later 407 with Keon Joseph 30 (6×4), reaching his 150 while batting with Joseph, who was run-out going for a second run.

The Developmental XI, through Jacobs, disposed of both Bramble and Raun Johnson (00) to wrap up the innings 11 minutes before the scheduled 17:00hrs close, with Jacobs claiming both wickets in the second over of the second new ball to finish with 2 for 57, in support to Ramcharran and Sankar.

At the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Essequibo, who won the toss and batted first against points leaders Demerara, were bowled out for 263 off 67.1 overs, with only Ricardo Adams 54 (61 bals, 10×4), Tulsiram Premnauth 44 (29 balls, 5×4; 3×6) and 40 each from Royan Fredericks and Brian Herbert leading their batting.

Fredericks struck eight fours and Herbert six as leg-spinner Amir Khan took 4 for 54 and Christopher Barnwell 3 for 27 for Demerara, who at the close of play were 60 for 2, having lost the wickets of Trevon Griffith 32 (5×4) and Shemroy Barrington 20, with Khan their not-out batsman on 3.

When the action resumes for the second day today at 09:30hrs, the Developmental XI will commence their reply to Berbice mammoth first-innings score, while Demerara will look to score the remaining 203 runs to overhaul Essequibo’s total.
