Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday launched its Hand-in-Hand-sponsored Golden Jubilee Celebration 40-over 2nd Division Cricket Tournament in the Boardroom of Hand-in-Hand Insurance Company.

In delivering remarks, Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club’s Secretary/Chief Executive Officer Hilbert Foster said the second division tournament which will bowl off shortly will be one that will be remembered, since the rest of the country is reeling from the negative effects of the ongoing local cricket crisis.“It would be cricket, lovely cricket and more cricket in the Ancient County,” Foster declared.

This will be the third successive year that Hand-in-Hand has chosen to renew their sponsorship of a 40-over second division tournament for teams in the West Berbice area.

According to Foster, the tournament will be contested on a knockout basis between 16 teams in the Region 5 District and the winning team would receive $60 000 and a trophy, while the runner-up team would receive $40 000.

The man-of-the-match in the final will earn $10 000 and a trophy.

Foster said the main aim of the tournament is to develop the game of cricket in the West Berbice area, to identify new talent and more especially, to celebrate the BCB’s 75th anniversary.

Among the teams expected to be a part of the tournament are; Blairmont, Bush Lot, Bath Settlement, Rainbow Generation, D’Edward, Rosignol and Hopetown.

Foster expressed his gratitude to the Board of Directors and management of Hand-in-Hand Group of Companies for their confidence in the BCB and for investing in the development of West Berbice cricket.

Foster issued a call for cricketers from all across West Berbice to take full advantage of the opportunities presented to them by the hard-working BCB which he said is fully committed to cricket in Region 5 and would continue to spearhead the development of the game at every level in the Region.

In response, Hand-in-Hand’s Human Resources/Admin Manager Zaida Joaquin said her company is pleased to be associated with not only the tournament but with the BCB, and Hand-in-Hand is very happy that steps are being taken to develop the sport of cricket in Berbice.

She said it is her desire that the tournament will be a good and competitive one and added that Hand-in-Hand is committed to the development of not only cricket in Berbice but also the development of the youths of Guyana in general.

Guyana, Jamaica battle for top spot

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - It can be called a group finale or top-of-the-table clash, but whatever name or names it is given, weather permitting today, Malta Supreme Guyana and former champions Jamaica will culminate action in Group A of this year’s West Indies Cricket Board NAGICO Super50 tournament at the Queen’s Park Oval from 14.00hrs this afternoon.

Both sides are on nine points, having defeated defending champions Windward Islands and Ireland in their two opening matches to secure a place in the semifinals, taking a bonus point each from Ireland in the process.

This means that today’s game can also be seen as a dress rehearsal for the final, which is set for the same venue and will see the winner take home the Clive Lloyd Trophy, if they both come away with victories in the semis.

The Guyanese last won a title at this level under the astute captaincy of Shivnarine Chanderpaul in 2005 when they defeated Barbados at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, to lift the WICB KFC Cup.

The Guyanese had an intense net session at the outdoor nets of the venue yesterday, while the Windward Islands and Ireland were going at each other on the field of play.

After they defeated defending champions Windward Islands and ousted them from the tournament in the process, Malta Supreme Guyana skipper Christopher Barnwell expressed his delight at the win, despite having to face certain hurdles prior to and during the contest.

“We did not get off to the best of starts, the wicket was playing a bit tricky and somehow the batters manage to stick it out and we know once we kept wickets in hand we can always go hard at the end.

“So we plan just to see out the new ball and ensure that we had wickets in hand for the latter part of the innings which eventually played out for us,” Barnwell said to WICB Media after the win against Windward Islands.

He added, “While the batters did a good job, the bowlers held their nerves to pull off the victory. I was very impressed with young Ronsford Beaton and also fellow fast bowler Paul Wintz as well as Veerasammy Permaul, who all held their nerves and bowled in the correct areas.”

MOMENTUM

Meanwhile, Barnwell says despite their success, his side will remain firmly grounded as they recognise their mission is not yet fulfilled.

“What we’re doing is taking it step by step; we’re just focusing on our goal and the process.”

“We would love to be in the final. We’re in the semi-finals so I think it is just a matter of taking the next game that we’ve got in stride and trying to continue with this momentum. We don’t want to be looking too far ahead of ourselves. I think for us it has been a process and we just want to continue that process.”

For today’s game, Malta Supreme Guyana will look to Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who is back after missing the last game due to an abscess on his right leg, Trevon Griffith and the tournament’s leading run scorer Ramnaresh Sarwan to once again bolster their batting.

Support will come from skipper Christopher Barnwell, Leon Johnson, Narsingh Deonarine and Royston Crandon and Robin Bacchus (if selected), with support from Anthony Bramble, Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo, Paul Wintz and Ronsford Beaton.

The bowling led by Beaton and Wintz, have already shown they can do the job with the new ball in both matches to date and against the Jamaicans, it should be no different, backed by Barnwell and the Albion Cricket Club spin trio in Bishoo, Permaul and Deonarine.

Chairman of Selectors Rayon Griffith, who has accompanied the team as the Assistant Coach to Esuan Crandon, yesterday told Chronicle Sport there is some concern as it relates to Malta Supreme Guyana’s fielding to date.

“There are some small areas we have to improve on, with the fielding department being of concern to us” said Griffith.

“We are not picking up the ball as clean as possible, but we already noted that to the players and have commenced some work in the areas of concern, while our spinners are not as consistent as we would like them to be, but there is work to be done and we are willing to assist them to get it right.”

Jamaica will be looking to former skipper Tamar Lambert and John Campbell, two of their inform batsmen to date, Andre McCarthy, Andre Russell and skipper Dave Bernard Jr., to lead them with the bat.

They will be backed by Carlton Baugh Jr. and Nikita Miller, with many Guyanese remembering Miller’s last ball six against Deonarine at the Guyana National Stadium last year, which earned the Jamaicans a win and took away from Guyana a semifinal spot.

In the bowling, former West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor along with Andrew Richardson and Sheldon Cottrell will take charge of both new balls, while they will receive valuable support from Bernard Jr., Russell, Lambert and Miller.

JAMAICA: David Bernard Jr (captain), Nikita Miller, Andre Russell, Carlton Baugh Jr (wicket-keeper), Tamar Lambert, Andrew Richardson, Horace Miller, John Campbell, Jermaine Blackwood, Andre McCarthy, Sheldon Cottrell, Jerome Taylor, Nkrumah Bonner, Kenar Lewis; Junior Bennett (coach).

GUYANA: Christopher Barnwell (captain), Shiv Chanderpaul,, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Anthony Bramble (wicket-keeper), Robin Bacchus, Trevon Griffith, Leon Johnson, Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon, Assad Fudadin, Devendra Bishoo, Veerasammy Permaul, Ronsford Beaton, Paul Wintz; Esuan Crandon (coach).

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Second Division cricket teams in the East Canje/East Coast Berbice area will have a chance to prove their worth when they meet each other in the Mashramani Cup.

Mashramani Cup, which is organised by the Young Warriors Cricket Club, is being promoted to develop young cricketers and also as a fund raising event for the club.

Mashramani Cup 2014 will be the second edition of the competition and will be held on February 23.

Ten teams will once again vie for the top price of $60,000 plus a trophy.

The second place team will collect $30,000 and trophy; third place finisher will collect $15,000, while the fourth place team will be presented with a trophy.

There will also be incentives for the man-of-the-match in the final.

Speaking at the launch of the tournament, secretary/treasurer of Young Warriors Cricket Club Anil Beharry explained that the proceeds from the first competition were used to purchase a number of things to spruce up the venue and improve the facilities, including acquiring a large cover for the pitch and square.

Officials of the Mashramani Cup and captains of the various clubs who attended the launch

This year, he added, the club hopes to continue improving the facility which is being touted as the second best ground in Berbice, second to Albion.

Ten teams have accepted the invitation to participate in the tournament. These are Gangaram Strikers, Betsy Ground Triple Stars, Goed Banana Land, Young and the Restless, Rose Hall Community Centre, Canefield, Young Warriors, Bristol Warriors, Number Two Cricket Club and Number 19 Combined.

Seawell Cricket Club will not be participating this year and their place has been taken by the Rose Hall Community Centre Club, which has been recently resuscitated.

“I am suggesting that when you receive your prize money, at least some should go back to the club to purchase new gear and help develop your clubs,” said Beharry, as he addressed captains of the various clubs who attended the launch.

The tournament will be played on a five over per side basis and teams will be allowed to field one first division player.

“We will be using the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) rules, which do not consider a player over the age of 40 as a first division player,” Beharry concluded.

Sarwan could be rested today for Guyana

Kaieteur News article.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - The confidence of the Guyana Malta Supreme team is high despite a few slight cases of illness in their camp ahead of today’s game against Jamaica in their final preliminary round of the Regional Super50 cricket competition at the Queens Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.

According to Manager of the team Alvin Johnson, Vice-Captain Shiv Chanderpaul has recovered well from an abscess at the back of his right thigh. He batted with little discomfort in the nets yesterday and should play today.

He however informed that leading run-scorer in the tournament Ramnaresh Sarwan and opener Assad Fudadin have contracted influenza and are being monitored ahead of today’s game.

But Johnson feels since Guyana is already in the semis this was a great opportunity for those who have not yet played to get their chance today.

“The Coach, Captain and chairman of selectors (Rayon Griffith) are the ones dealing with selection issues. So that’s my personal view. While it’s important that we win, I feel that since it’s not a must win game we could give the guys a little rest,” Johnson opined.

Griffith said that every game is a big game and while it does not matter who Guyana plays in the semi-final, a win would be good for the players since as a team you need to cultivate the habit of winning. “If we want to win this tournament we will have to beat all the best teams at some point so we don’t have a preference at the moment.”

“We want to win the zone but we will make a decision in the morning (today) if Sarwan plays or not. Fudadin’s condition is not as serious. Apart from that, the team spirit is high and we are satisfied with the way things are going so far,” Griffith, a former First-Class fast bowler, explained.

Griffith said the team has taken note of the slow strike rate of the top order and revealed that the topic of scoring a bit faster has been discussed in the Guyana camp.

“We have discussed the number of dot balls that we have faced and should see a difference in the other games. I think (Chris) Barnwell and (Leon) Johnson played really well in the last few overs to ensure we got challenging scores,” Griffith disclosed.

The Guyanese had their last practice yesterday at the outdoor nets at the ‘Oval’ and Skipper Barnwell said his side was taking it step by step.

“We’re just focusing on our goal and the process. We would love to be in the final. We’re in the semi-finals so I think it is just a matter of taking the next game that we’ve got in stride and trying to continue with this momentum. We don’t want to be looking too far ahead of ourselves,” the 27-year-old Barnwell said.

Today’s Day/Night game is scheduled to commence at 14:00hrs.

If they mentally defeated it folows on the field: former Essequibo player Clain Williams

Toronto, Canada - Thirty-two-year-old Clain Williams realised the importance of mental toughness and that has been an area that responsible for Essequibo’s steady downfall over the past decades.

They lacked it badly and outplayed by their opponents, Berbice and Demerara at the inter-county levels in the annual Guyana Cricket Board tournaments coming out with some pathetic performances.

Williams, a former Essequibo under-19 batsman, currently resides in United States of America (USA) and already donned in that country’s colours. From another territory, the right-hander still sees the difference in Essequibo’s cricket.

“Essequibo cricket future depends on the willingness of the cricketers to work on themselves to be physically and mentally fit to take on the so-called giants like Berbice and Demerara who are decorated with test players, and most players I know get nervous before the game,” Williams lamented.

He continued: “And if they are mentally defeated it will follow on the field while the coaches can only do so much, if you really want to make an impression, you the individual must work on your game as well.”

Over the years, despite their regular participation, Essequibo has failed miserably to match their skills at the various levels against the two counties and something must be done drastically to help lift the standard of the game, according to Williams.|

Having represented USA in several International Cricket Council (ICC) Associated divisional matches since making his debut in 2010, Williams expressed great pleasure of featuring in the country’s colours as well.

However, he reserved special mention to the politics that he vehemently feels affecting the game to a great extent. “The cricket is not where it should be, politics ‘killing’ the cricket, and I thought it was bad in Guyana but it’s really worse up here surprisingly,” Williams revealed via email.

From where he left off in Essequibo rating as a very destructive opening batsman, Williams continued to ply his trade in North America and has been a dominant batsman throughout his career there.

He asserted the game is quite competitive and he enjoyed it on the field to a great degree but is still disgruntled with the way things have been proceeding off field. Notwithstanding that, Williams stated that he wants to make a big impact by scoring more consistently in the this summer.

Born in Reliance, Essequibo Coast, Region Two, Williams, honed most of his cricketing skills at Anna Regina Community Centre ground while he represented Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School at that level with brilliant success too.

He was very thankful to the late Courtney Gonsalves, a former Guyana fast bowler and Essequibo senior inter-county coach, who played a pivotal role in seeing the rapid development of Williams.

“I dedicate my career to Courtney Gonsalves a great coach, he made a cricketer out of me, I was just a little boy who he just took under his wings and made me the cricketer I turned out to be, I definitely owe it to him,” Williams related.

Following the sudden death of former Guyana player Shivanandan Madholall, Williams is still shock with his former teammate. He commented that Madholall was a fantastic team member and also reminiscing the days they both played at a national trial.

Williams scored consistently and heavily but was still ignored by the selectors. He said that year (1999) is still unforgettable given the fact he made the most runs and still he didn’t find favour with the selectors.

“In that trial game, I scored a century (138) and then went on to make few half-centuries and still did not make the team; Madholall played a supporting role in one of the games and I think he made 70 plus runs; after the game he gave me a bat, and to learn of his death was very shocking,” Williams declared.

Meanwhile, Williams is among the large number of cricketers coming out of Reliance to represent Essequibo inter-county teams from under-15, 16, 17, 19 and the senior combination. Some of the names are as follows: Clain Williams, Rovendra Mandolall, Shawn and Motie Narine (unrelated), Charlie Austin, Shivanandan Madholall (decease), Rovindra Parasram, Alfred Maycock, Ryan Amsterdam, Narindra Madholall, Balchand Shivamber (decease), Renford Beaton, Lawrence Farnum, Ravendra Madholall, Claude Amsterdam, Avinash Parasram, Chubby Persaud, Prakash Ganpat, Mohindra Boodram, Rajin Parasram among others.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Nkrumah Bonner’s century and a fast bowling attack from Andre Russell and Sheldon Cottrell gave Jamaica a 10-run victory over Guyana in their NAGICO Super50 Regional cricket match at the Queen’s Park Oval on Saturday.

Bonner’s unbeaten 122 helped Jamaica reach 243 for 7 from their 50 overs and then restricted Guyana to 233 all out.

Jamaica won the toss and elected to bat against Guyana in their final preliminary match in Group A of the tournament.

Runs were hard to come by for the Jamaicans, who were 97-4 at one stage, but made a revival thanks mainly to a 73-run eigth-wicket partnership between Bonner and Nikita Miller.

Bonner struck 122 from 157 balls which included eight fours and five sixes.

Andre McCarthy’s 27 and an unbeaten 20 from Miller were the only other resistance to the Guyanese bowlers.

Points Standings Post Match 10

Veerasammy Permaul (2-45) and Ronsford Beaton (2-56) both took two wickets each for Guyana.

Guyana had the match in their grasp when they were cruising on 96-2, following an opening partnership of 88 runs between Trevon Griffith (37) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (65).

But the slide began following Chanderpaul’s departure and some aggressive bowling from Russell and Cottrell didn’t help Guyana’s batting.

Assad Fudadin (21) was threatening to turn things in favour of the Guyanese but his attempt at a big hit at Cottrell resulted in a top edge and a comfortable catch to Miller at mid wicket. Thereafter, only Anthony Bramble (14) and Veerasammy Permaul (17 not out) got into double figures.

Guyana reached 233 from 49.5 overs withRussell finished with 3-51 and Cottrell 3-62.

The Jamaicans finished unbeaten with 13 points while Guyana take the second qualifying spot in the Group with nine points.

Guyanese Hemnarine Chattergoon elected CSCA president

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - His representation for Guyana and Canada has persistently given Hemnarine Chattergoon greater motivation to return something to the game.

His dedication has paid off and he strongly recommends that young, aspiring cricketers train hard, which makes the game easier for them, both mentally and physically.

Chattergoon was elected President of the Canadian Softball Cricket Association (CSCA) and is already aiming for more success in 2014. He expressed satisfaction after 2013 was deemed an accomplished season. He was the vice-president for the past two consecutive years.

Chattergoon plays actively too for Jaguar in the CSCA competition, while the former West Indies under-19 batsman represents Vikings Cricket Club in the annual Toronto and District Cricket Association Elite League.

Hemnarine, the elder brother of former West Indies opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon, played a pivotal role as well for Hawaiian Arctic Cricket Club, which won the Scarborough Cricket Association title for the past four consecutive years and featured in the Golden Tigers’ colours at the Brampton/Etobicoke League.

During an exclusive interview on Monday from his Mississauga home in the Greater Toronto Area, the right-hander declared that softball has grown tremendously over the years.

He wants to see the association pull off another good year, given the fact that 2013 had over 20 teams involved – a manifestation of the continued support and players’ willingness to participate as well.

“We at the CSCA will continue to work hard over the next 12 months; I know the cricket season [is[ very short in Canada, but it was wonderful to see the large number of players coming and playing on a regular basis,” Chattergoon said.

Sunshine Cricket Club emerged as champion last year and again a plethora of seasoned players featured, much to the delight of the association. Some of players were Royston Crandon, Damodar Daesrath, Rajindra Chandrika, Krishna Deosaran, Wasim Haslim, Garvin Singh, Mahendranauth ‘Bobby’ Parasnauth and Troy Gobin, among others, including several top softball cricketers.

“It was very pleasing to watch the players come out and be a part of the action; the guys wanted to play and they seemed to have also enjoyed themselves. That is one of our objectives again this year – to have players who can make a big contribution to the game,” the 36-year-old occasional off-spinner said.

Apart from Hemnarine and Sewnarine, Ramnarine and Harrynarine are also siblings and would have donned the Guyana’s colours at the youth level. Hemnarine stated that “it was a great privilege” to represent his native country and then Canada, and that has inspired him to coach at the club level where he now lives.

Additionally, Hemnarine praised his fellow executives for their efforts last year and is very optimistic they will return with the same level of solid commitment and dynamism. He feels the players and the association are keeping softball cricket on a steady growth and was very thankful to the sponsors, whose input he said must be recognised.

Meanwhile, Hemnarine plans to be in Guyana later this year to take part in the annual Guyana Cup softball Mini World Cup tournament, which is being run under the auspices of the Guyana Softball Floodlights Association. He said that once he is selected by any Canadian team, he is absolutely willing to showcase his softball playing talent.

At the previous event, a Canadian side did participate. The players were selected by the Ontario Softball Cricket League, which already declared their interest in returning in 2014.

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) last Friday launched a massive incentive scheme for its cricketers.

According to the club’s Secretary/Chief Executive Officer Hilbert Foster, since 1991 the club organised an annual ceremony for its membership from a humble beginning of giving away four trophies and similar number of water bottles, but said the ceremony has grown into by far the country’s largest awards ceremony.

Addressing members of the media last Friday at the Hand-in-Hand boardroom, Foster said for the club’s 23rd anniversary ceremony last year, a total of $2.5M worth of trophies, medals, gifts and prizes were shared out to 40 club members by sponsors and friends of the club.

Foster said the main objectives of the club over the years have been to recognise its heroes, honour outstanding performances, encourage members to aim for excellence, assist in the raising of the standard of the club and recognise the contribution of sponsors.

Foster said this year the club has undergone a major restructuring which included the upgrading of the awards programme which will be held on April 27 this year with a total of $3M in prizes on offer. The club’s cricketer-of-the-year would take home $500 000 in prizes including a cash prize of $200 000.

He indicated that 42 awards would be distributed but special emphasis would be placed on the runner-up cricketer-of-the-year, junior cricketer-of-the-year, the most disciplined cricketer, most promising player, most committed player, female cricketer and benefit-of-the-year for a long-serving cricketer.

Foster said Travelspan has come on board and will donate a return ticket ($150 000) to the United States of America for the best Regional cricketer and would go to the cricketer with the best performance by a club member representing Guyana or the West Indies.

Forster said hopefully, similar awards would be given to the local cricketer-of-the-year and female cricketer-of-the-year.

The RHTY&SC’s Foster said he is delighted to have Travelspan once again on board and it is the club’s hope that the relationship would grow stronger in the future.

According to Foster, among the prizes that will be on offer is one year’s free supply of cable television, airplane tickets to the USA, visits to local resorts, cell phones, jewellery, designer clothing, electronic gadgets, educational packages and bicycles.

Meanwhile Mohamed’s Enterprise has joined the long list of sponsors for the awards ceremony and has committed the $200 000 cash prize for the cricketer-of-the-year award.
