WICB Media Release.

GROS-ISLET, St. Lucia –The West Indies Cricket Board announced today that all-rounder Shemaine Campbell has been added to West Indies Women’s squad for the remainder of the One-day International Home Series against Pakistan Women here.

The Windies Women will now have a 14-member squad for the last three matches of the series which have ICC Women’s Championship points on offer.

Vice-captain and medium-fast bowler Shakera Selman missed the opener of the four-match series with a foot injury and is being treated by the medical staff.

The 25-year-old Campbelle, a stylish right-handed batsman and part-time off-spinner, made her international debut six years ago and has played 61 ODIs.

Merissa Aguilliera hit her fifth ODI half-century, but Javeria Khan topped it with her seventh to lead the Pakistani Women to a six-wicket victory over the Windies Women in the opening day/night contest on Friday at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

Aguilleira led a recovery with an unbeaten 67 from 83 balls that included five boundaries, propelling the home team to a respectable 222 for nine from their allocation of 50 overs, after they were sent in to bat on a hard, true pitch.

Inconsistent bowling from the West Indies Women and purposeful application from the visitors’ batting, led by Javeria, whose 90 from 123 balls included eight boundaries, allowed the visitors to reach their target with 11 balls remaining.

The Windies Women trail 0-1 in the four-match series, but will be looking to bounce back in the second ODI on Sunday at the same venue.

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) defeated the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) by 26 runs to reclaim the Carib Beer T20 first division title at the DCC ground, yesterday.

Shurfane Rutherford was adjudged the man-of-the-match for his entertaining performance with the bat and ball.

He blasted a quick fire 37 from 20 balls which included three fours and as many sixes in the DCC total of 170 all out, from their allotted overs.

Kevin Boodie (40) top scored for the home team opening the batting with Brian Sattaur (10). Sattuar departed with the score on 19 then Jamal Hinckson (01) followed six runs after. The skipper Christopher Barnwell (10) did not stick around for long either which brought Rutherford to the middle with Boodie.

The two National Under-19 batsmen put on a 66-run partnership that spiked the run rate and made way for another little cameo.

However, GCC claimed three wickets in the space of three runs as Rutherford was the first to go on 109. Boodie followed with the score on 110 while Jahron Byron (01) was dismissed on 119.

The wicketkeeper Kemol Savory spanked 34 from 13 balls with three boundaries and three maximums down the order to shift the weight of the match even as wickets continued to fall. Dennis Squires pitched in with 10 while Paul Wintz made 7.

Ronsford Beaton led the bowling for GCC with 3 – 38 while Leon Johnson bagged 2 – 29. Raj Nanan and Devon Lord supported with one wicket each.

GCC struggled in reply after a poor start. Openers Jeetendra Sookedeo (08) and Vishaul Singh (04) along with Johnson (05) were all removed cheaply before Raymond Reifer and Robin Bacchus tried to stage a recovery.

Reifer rounded up 38 from 36 balls while Bacchus was stopped on 20 facing his 19th delivery. Ronaldo Ali Mohammed was removed without scoring while Nanan turned in 17 from nine balls. Reifer fell and took the score to 110 – 7. Not long after the asking rate became more than GCC could offer.

Elon Fernandes battled for his 21 late in the order while Anthony Adams (05) and Devon Lord (01) were unbeaten when the overs expired with GCC on 141 – 8.

Under-15 National Ashmead Nedd, Rutherford and Squires shared two wickets a piece while Barnwell had one.

Steve’s Jewellery continues tradition with MVP prizes

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - One of Guyana’s leading jewellers, Steve’s Jewellery, has renewed its commitment to the country’s premier softball competition, the Guyana Softball Cup, by once again providing the much sought-after Most Valuable Player prize.

Two beautiful gold and diamond bracelets, which have become quite iconic of the Guyana Softball Cup, will once again be at stake in the fifth edition of the tournament, owing to the generosity of the Church Street-based jewellery establishment.

The MVP of both the Open and Masters categories will have their wrist adorned with the intricately crafted pieces, which were presented to officials of the competition’s organising body, the Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA), by proprietor of Steve’s Jewellery, Steve Naraine, on Saturday.

According to Naraine, the two bracelets have been created using Guyana’s finest minerals, and the lucky players can be assured of being in possession of a quality piece of jewellery.

A former president of the GFSCA, Naraine said his company will continue to support the Guyana Softball Cup, which will be held from October 30 to November 1 this year, featuring top local and foreign teams.

He wished the players well in their endeavours to cop the coveted MVP award, while he also expressed confidence that the tournament will be another huge success.

GFSCA executive member Dharam Persaud said the association is extremely grateful for the contribution from Steve’s Jewellery, noting that such a prestigious MVP prize can only serve to inspire the players to perform to their full potential.

Persaud noted that the Naraine has always been a staunch supporter of softball cricket, and the Guyana Softball Cup in particular, ever since its inception in 2011.

The GFSCA official also used the opportunity to encourage members of the public to witness the games, adding that there will be lots of giveaways for spectators on the day of the finals, November 1, at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground, Queenstown.

Meanwhile, Vice-president of the GFSCA, Ricky Deonarain, in giving an update on preparations on Saturday, pointed out that all systems are falling into place, and another successful competition is in the making.

He revealed that a total of 24 teams will compete in the two categories, including top teams from North America, who are expected to arrive in Guyana shortly.

The Guyana Softball Cup commenced in 2011 and instantly became a hit with players and fans alike, attracting massive crowds and also putting some hard earned cash in the pockets of those who entertain with bat and ball on the field.

This year promises to be even better, as the GFSCA is aiming to surpass the achievements of the previous four years in terms of spectators’ involvement and the handsome rewards at stake for the players.

The champion team in the Men’s Open is guaranteed a whopping $800,000 first prize and a huge trophy, while the losing finalist will have to settle for $200,000 and a trophy. In the Masters’ division, the winning team will pocket $600,000 with the runner-up assured of $150,000. The Man-of-the-Match in both finals will receive a trophy.

On the day of the final, apart from three return tickets to Barbados, compliments of Survival Travel Agency, there will be lots of hampers and giveaways for spectators.

Wolf’s Warriors and Floodlights are the defending champions of the Open and Masters categories, while the previous champions were Trophy Stall (Open) and New York Better Hope (Masters) in 2013, NYSCL New York (Open) and Savage Masters in 2012 and Cotton Field Wild Oats (Open) and Regal Seniors (Masters) in 2011.

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - With the aim of highlighting the rich talent in the Ancient County of Berbice and the promotion of sport as an avenue for youths to be meaningfully engaged, the Guyana Beverage Company (GBC) on Friday launched the Busta Champion of Champions cricket competition at the company’s head office at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

The tournament is organised by the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC), and sponsored by the beverage company under its Busta soft drink brand.

The event, in its 12th year, is regarded by many as one of the more popular cricket events in Guyana.

At the launch, RHTY&SC CEO/Secretary, Hilbert Foster, commended the beverage company for continuing its dedication to the sport. He added that the event this year marks a special relationship between the club and the GBC.

“The RHTY&SC, since its formation in September of 1990, has been blessed to be surrounded by a dedicated group of sponsors who stood by our side in and out of season, with one of them being the Guyana Beverage Company, under the dynamic leadership of Robert Selman,” Foster said.

He added, “Busta’s sponsorship clearly reflects the confidence that the company has in the organising skills of the club and it also shows the remarkable bond between two outstanding organisations.”

Representing the GBC, Managing Director, Robert Selman, said that the company was pleased to sponsor an event controlled by a committee that displays good organisational standards.

Selman informed the media that his company has confidence in the administration of the RHTY&SC, hence the continued partnership.

“This club is a model that people should look at and see how they organise their programmes and conduct themselves and if they take one page from this club they can improve the way they operate,” Selman opined.

The Managing Director said the sponsorship is part of giving back to the people of Guyana.

The tournament, as is customary, will involve eight teams. However, seven teams, namely West Berbice, Police, Blairmont Community Centre, Tucber Park, Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets, Young Warriors and Upper Corentyne, have confirmed their participation. Matches will be played on a knockout basis.

The tournament will bowl off on November 14, and the winner will receive $100,000, while $50,000 will be given to the runner-up. Several individual incentives will also be up for grabs.

The company on Friday also renewed its partnership with the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) and Enterprise Busta Sports Club (EBSC).

Selman disclosed at the conclusion of the three tournaments, the winning teams will play each other in a tournament at the Enterprise Community Centre ground.

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - A responsible half-century from Assad Fudadin, coupled with four-wicket hauls from Rajiv Ivan and Shawn Pereira, led Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets to a resounding semi-final victory in the 2015 Bobby Deonarine and Tom Gruntzel-sponsored Tenelec Inc 50 overs 1st Division tournament.

In glorious sunshine and on a sun-baked dusty Area ‘H’ outfield, the hosts won the toss and batted first.

They enjoyed a solid opening partnership of 67 from Vidal Crandon and Fudadin. Crandon went first, off the bowling of national U-19 all-rounder Kassim Khan for a boundary-filled 37.

The consistent Jason Sinclair joined Fudadin and together they put on exactly 100 for the second wicket before Sinclair was bowled by Kevin Ramdeen for 42.

Ramdeen kept a check on the RHTY&SC’s progress by getting the wickets of Ivan for 14 and all-rounder Clinton Pestano for no score.

However, the lower order rallied their team to an impressive 254 for 8 off their allotted overs.

Fudadin top-scored with 68.

Bowling for Young Warriors CC Ramdeen took 3 for 54 off 10 overs and Khan 2 for 41.

In reply, the visitors lost Berbice Under-15 opener Alex Algoo early by the run-out route for one.

They never really recovered except for a few promising starts from national senior opener and West Indies Under-19 player Shimron Hetmyer with 45, Kassim Khan 36 not out, former national youth batsman Seon Hetmyer 27 and playoff centurion Waheid Edwards 20.

They ended on 193 all out in 42.5 overs. Doing the damage for the hosts were Rajiv Ivan with 4 for 34 off 10 overs and Shawn Pereira 4 for 39 off 10 overs.

Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets will now play neighbours and arch rivals Albion Community Centre Cricket Club at a date and venue to be announced.

Both clubs are asked to note that the Berbice River Bridge final is now confirmed for Saturday October 24, 2015 at the Port Mourant ground from 09:30hrs.

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) on Monday presented a number of cricket kits to its coaches who have been assigned to the various zones and districts across the country to ensure the effective conduct of its National Secondary School Cricket League (NSSCL), sponsored by Banks DIH and Digicel.

NSSCL’s Anthony D’Andrade handed over the kits at the GCB Secretariat. D’Andrade, who was hired by the GCB to coordinate and conduct the League among other duties, urged the Coaches to be responsible and make good use of the gear, adding that it was their job to see that the kits were properly taken care of.

D’Andrade is a former national youth cricketer out of Berbice. He was also a secondary school teacher. As such, the GCB believes that he is suited to manage such an important undertaking.

GCB Territorial Development Officer Colin Stuart noted that cricket gear was costly so the Board was making sure that the lack of it did not deter young talents for the future; hence, there was a need for as many youths as possible to participate, Stuart said.

The zones in the League are Corentyne, New Amsterdam/Canje, West Berbice, Mahaica/Mahaicony, East Coast, North Georgetown, South Georgetown, East Georgetown, East Bank Demerara, Highway, Upper Demerara, West Coast Demerara, West Bank Demerara, East Bank Essequibo, Wakenaam, Leguan, Bartica, North Essequibo Coast, South Essequibo Coast and Central Essequibo Coast.

The League was launched on Friday last at the Everest Cricket Club Ground and there were three matches in commemoration. It will continue today in the West Berbice District, then in Georgetown on Wednesday.

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Bravados Cricket Club crushed Better Hope Sports Club by 109 runs before a large crowd, on a good outfield and in brilliant sunshine in the East Coast Cricket Board’s (ECCB) Second Division 40-over Tournament final.

The eventual victors won the toss and elected to bat on an excellent track. Anthony Ifill and Nigel Estrado started the innings briskly. Estrado struck three boundaries and a massive six before he was trapped lbw on 20 with the score at 23 in the third over.

Marcus Watkins joined Ifill and both batsmen batted sensibly to reach 110-1 in the 18th over before Watkins was bowled by Jayadev Mana for 44 then Ifill was next to go for a well-played 40.

Kellon Carmichael, Lionel Wordsworth and Kelwin Bovell went in quick succession as the score ticked over to 139 for 6 in the 28th over.

Better Hope looked to tighten the screws but captain Earl Gilkes joined Rawle Merrel to steady the ship and press forward. Merrel was removed for a well-played 34 as Bravados reached 200-7.

They were eventually stopped on 242 in the 39th over with captain Gilkes contributing a well-constructed 37. Jayadev Mana finished with 2-36 while Daniel Kowlessar had 2-38 and Amir Khan, 2-20.

Roy Persaud and Daniel Kowlessar started the Better Hope Sports Club innings as Ifill and Seon Sampson opened the attack for Bravados. Needing to score more than 6 runs per over to win, Persaud was removed early for 6.

Some indifferent bowling by the Bravados attack saw some 31 extras given away as Better Hope were skittled out for 133 in 24 overs. Simpson, Gilkes and Alex Culley were the bowlers responsible for Better Hope’s demise as Seon Simpson finished with 4-31, Gilkes 3-22 and Cully 2-28.

Amir Khan was left unbeaten on 42 while Mulchan Singh (18) and Daniel Kowlessar (13) were the only other batsmen to meet double figures.

Gilkes was adjudged man-of-the-match while Khan was awarded a medal for his outstanding performances for the losing side.

Following the match, president of the ECCB Mr. Bissoondyal Singh congratulated both teams for reaching the final especially Bravados for winning the competition and expressed his gratitude to Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall, Corporate Guyana, the clubs, the NDCs and the umpires for their continuous contributions and support of development of the game on the East Coast of Demerara.

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - The Ancient County of Berbice will be hosting its first Christmas Village during the upcoming festive season.

The eight cricket teams of Guyana’s leading youth and sport organisation, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) and the Tourism Ministry have come together to host the historic event as part of an effort to spread the meaning of Christmas, to promote social cohesion among residents and to provide clean entertainment for families.

The cricket teams will also use the opportunity to promote their “Say Yes to Sports and Education” message. The Christmas Village will be hosted in the compound of the Rose Hall Town Primary School from December 20-24.

The Club has established a working committee headed by its long-serving Secretary/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hilbert Foster to plan for the event.  Other members include Ravin Kissoonlall, Keith Hicks, Elizabeth Brusch, Gregory Butcher, Neville Beaton, Mark Papannah and two members of each of the Club’s cricket teams.

The Tourism Ministry on Friday last committed to co-sponsoring the event and handed over a sponsorship cheque for an undisclosed amount.  The Ministry will also assist the RHTY&SC with technical support to ensure that the Christmas Village Project is a huge success.

The Village would consist of a large depiction of the Nativity Scene, while the entire compound will be transformed into a festive atmosphere with lights, Christmas characters and decorations.

The cricket teams will also be joining with the GuySuCo Training Centre to construct a 20-foot Christmas tree, while other attractions will include games for children, a horror house, a photo studio, a Christmas exhibition and numerous booths that will sell items for the festive season.

The cricketers will also use the occasion to promote the importance of youth involvement in sport and staying in school to complete one’s education.

Twelve lucky children will win toys for the holidays on each night of the Christmas Village, while three families will receive a holiday food hamper, compliments of the Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets First Division team.

Foster expressed confidence that the event will be a huge success, and will attract numerous local and overseas tourists to the township and most importantly promote social cohesion among residents.

He expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its cooperation and made special mention of Minister Cathy Hughes and Tourism Liaison and Planning Officer Catherine Martin.

The RHTY&SC, he stated, will extend all its organising experience to make the event the best-ever hosted locally and extended an invitation to corporate Guyana for them to come on board as sponsors or set up Christmas themed booths.

Interested persons can contact the RHTY&SC Secretariat on telephone number 337-4562 or email foster_hilbert@yahoo.com.

Meanwhile, Martin expressed the Ministry’s delight at working with an outstanding organisation, whose track record speaks volumes. She expressed confidence that all the event’s objectives will be fulfilled, and hailed the cricket teams and the management of the RHTY&SC for their visionary proposal to the Ministry.   The Ministry, she stated, will support such projects as they fall within its mandate.
