Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - All roads lead to the Malteenoes Sports Club ground in Thomas Lands tomorrow from 09:00hrs for what is anticipated a pulsating Corporate Eight-a-side cricket tournament and proceeds from this event will go towards the ongoing renovation work at the club.

A day of fun and frolic for the entire family is expected while a well-stocked Bar and take-away lunches and Fish & Chips will be on sale.

Defending Champions Qualfon, Upper Level Barbers, Lawyers, Media, Watsila, Police Offers, National Drainage & Irrigation Athority (NDIA) and DDL Renegades will battle for supremacy and bragging rights on the cricket field.

The fund raising event is being held in support of renovation projects by the club which was formed in 1902 by a Barbadian Taylor named Ferdinand Archer and produced West Indies fast bowlers Colin Stuart, who played six Tests and five ODIs and Barrington Browne, who played four ODIs in India in 1994. Indomattie Goordial also played Test and ODIs for the West Indies female team.

John Trim, Charlie Jones, Glendon Gibbs, Rex Collimore, Clayton Lambert, Ian and Bishop were also West Indians players, who represented Malteenoes in club cricket.

Malteenoes Sports Club, venue for tomorrow’s fund raising Corporate Cricket contest.

The club was initially located at Eve Leary on Camp Street, in Georgetown but with the militarisation of Eve Leary during the Second World War, the ground was absorbed into the military zone and Malteenoes relocated to its present location, with freehold ownership of its land.

Malteenoes fulfilled its intended role during those formative years by providing young men and women the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities such as football, cricket and field hockey and indoor activities such as badminton, table tennis, and dominoes.

Since the 1980s Malteenoes has been playing a leading role in the development of youth cricket. The club started a youth programme in 1984 under former President Claude Rapheal, which has produced a steady stream of competitive young cricketers.

In 1987 half of the 14-man Guyana U-19 squad which toured Jamaica for that year’s Regional U-19 cricket year, were Malteenoes players, a record which still exists. Those players were Barrington Browne, Colwin Cort, Nigel Greaves, Glen Robinson, Shawn Holder, Sean Devers and the late Neezam Hafeez.

The programme was formalised into the Malteenoes Cricket Academy in July 1993 and the club’s Motto ‘our youth, our future’ still rings true today.

Malteenoes has been very influential both on and off field in the development of sports in Guyana, especially cricket and more recently Table Tennis. Despite many challenges the club remains firmly committed to this objective, which it considers to be an important means of educating young people and channeling their energies into meaningful activity.

DCB Annual General Meeting now set for April 30 at GNIC Sports Club

Guyana Chronicle article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Following a meeting of the membership of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) last Friday, it was decided on that its Annual General Meeting (AGM) will now be held on April 30 at the GNIC Sports Club on Woolford Avenue.

According to a release from the DCB, the meeting was keeping in accordance with the Guyana Cricket Administration Act (Act No. 14 of 2014) (GCAA), and saw attendance from a majority of their constituent members.

Major General (Retired) Norman McLean was unanimously appointed to chair the meeting where the members discussed a wide range of matters affecting the conduct, the playing and the administration of cricket in Demerara and there was the general feeling that a resolution of the crisis in Demerara cricket would essentially pave the way towards legality, order and good governance at all levels including the West Indies Cricket Board.

“With the successful passage of the GCAA, the delegates were optimistic that at long last, proper and lawful elections of the DCB could now be held and would include the Upper Demerara Cricket Association (UDCA)” the DCB said in the release.

The DCB said that at Friday’s meeting, several other issues were discussed, including the injunction preventing all those who were purporting to be executive members of the DCB, their servants and or agents, from performing the functions and duty as officers of the DCB (Raj Singh, Anand Sanasie et al).

Also discussed was the selection of teams from Georgetown and East Coast by persons unknown, the exclusion of Upper Demerara Cricket Association (Linden, etc) from Demerara cricket and the denial of any funding, including for cricket development, to the Georgetown Cricket Association, the East Coast Cricket Board and the Upper Demerara Cricket Association.

The DCB further shed some concerns over the donation of cricket gear received from the WICB to only selective clubs and bypassing the Area Boards/Associations, “the plethora of court actions against the legitimate stakeholders of Demerara cricket by the purported executives of the Guyana Cricket Board, and alarmingly, it is this identical group that has been usurping the functions of the executives of the Demerara Cricket Board”.

In the release issued, the DCB said that “Mr Raj Singh holds shares as president of the DCB in a privately registered company, DEB Essentials Inc. (renamed Cricket Guyana Inc.), when in fact he was never elected president of the DCB and received no such permission from the membership”

“The complicity of the WICB in supporting the illegality in Guyana cricket in order to secure votes and generally the indifference of the WICB to all of the well-publicised critical problems affecting cricket in Guyana, including illegal elections and financial misappropriation, the phantom group running off competitions in Demerara deliberately excluding the Upper Demerara Cricket Association,” the DCB also listed as concerns.

Guyana Times article.

Georgetown, Guyana - In an effort to upgrade the facilities that currently exist at the Thomas Lands-based Malteenoes Sports Club, executives of the 113-year club will be hosting a fundraising cricket competition and Bar-B-Que today, with action set to commence as early as 09:00h.

Eight corporate teams will provide the on-field cheers; while beyond the boundary there will be musical entertainment for patrons.

To ‘bowl’ things off, the organisers will perform the draw of teams to square off in what is virtually a quarter-final, but they have granted the Media XI the opportunity to play the first match since they have another engagement during the day.

Besides the Media XI, the other participating teams are Guyana Bar Association, Upper Level Barber Shop, National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, Police Officers, Qualfon, Demerara Distillers Limited, Renegades and Wartsilla Power Company.

Fawaz Mohamed (second left) representing Tiger Sports presents one of the shirts to Media XI skipper John Ramsingh. Sharing the moment are, from left, media players Calvin Roberts, Avenash Ramzan and Zaheer Mohamed

The day’s activities, which are being co-sponsored by General Industrial Supplies Enterprise, Trophy Stall and Star Party Rental, will be coordinated by members of the Malteenoes Sports Club and will see the top three teams receiving trophies, while individual prizes will be available for the Most Valuable Player in the final, the Best Batsman and Best Bowler of the day.

The umpires will be Linden Matthews, Joseph Jeffrey and Shannon Crawford, while the Match Referee is Omar Bacchus.

Meanwhile, Tiger Sports of Old Road, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, on Saturday outfitted the Media XI with jerseys to compete in today’s encounter. USAGCA’s Guyana tour…Gangi’s 60 spurs USA unit to two-run win against Guyana U-17s

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - As part of its cricket development initiative, the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has collaborated with the USA Global Cricket Academy (USAGCA) for their youth tour of Guyana which began with the North American U-18 team, led by an accomplished 60 from Kushal Gangi, beating the National U-17 side by two runs at Everest yesterday.

In a game which began 220 minutes late due to early morning showers and reduced from 50 to 35 overs the visitors batted first and reached 151-8 when their overs expired in hazy sunshine and on a traditional slow Everest track which offered plenty of assistance for the spinners.

But Josh Patel captured 4-25 and got support from Guruhshu Sharma (3-31) as the National U-17s fell for 150 all out despite a solid 54 from opener Raymond Perez in an exciting finish which saw the home needing two off the last ball with their last pair at the crease.

Cushal Gangi drives elegantly for one of his 10 boundaries at Everest during his entertaining 60 for the USA unit.

The last over began with 10 runs needed to win and the last pair of Kevin St Clair and Teven McCalmont (15*) gathered eight runs from the first five balls and with the small but vocal crowd on its feet, Sinclair pulled Derrick Narine to the fielder at mid-wicket to spark jubilant celebrations among the American’s camp.

After Sagar Patel fell for one at 8-1, Gangi, who played several audacious shots and particularly strong on the leg-side joined Sharma and the pair took the score 66 before Sharma departed.

But when Darshan Persaud had Gangi neatly stumped at 112-4 nobody except Chetram Persaud, who hit a six in his unbeaten 20, reached double figures as left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd, the son of former Guyana off-spinner and National U-17 Coach Gavin Nedd, grabbed 3-28 and got support from Persaud (2-18).

When National Colts began their run chase Perez and Bashar Yadram (15) added 40 for the second wicket before Patel, who removed the first three batsmen, went to work in overcast conditions. Sharma completed the job to see his team to a thrilling win.

USACA Guyana Tour…Guyanese Narine spurs USA to victory over Berbice U-18s

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - A 62-run partnership between Derrick Narine (54) and Nandan Polisetty (33) led the United States of America Cricket Academy (USACA) U-18s to an exciting 24-run win over the Berbice U-18 side in the agriculture setting of the Port Mourant ground in Corentyne Berbice yesterday.

Narine, who hails from DeEdward Village in West Berbice and is one of four Guyanese in USA line-up, stroked five fours from 52 balls to spur the USA Combination to 188 all out in 44.5 overs.

Daniel Samaroo (4-31) and Asif Ali (3-31) did the damage with the ball for Berbice who responded with 165 all out in 43.5 overs. Only Joel Seetram (40) and Retesh Umroa (21) offered resistance to pacer Jamiel Jackman, who bowled with lively pace, India-born left-arm spinner Jash Patel and Sahil Patel each picked up two wickets for the winners.

In hazy sunshine and with a strong breeze blowing across the large ground, the USA under-18 side won the toss and opted to bat on a slightly rough outfield with a few bald patches.

Gauranshu Sharma danced into off-spinner Kevin Sinclair, who opened the bowling, and majestically stroked him down the ground for four and along with Sagar Patel, who worked the ball into the gaps and drove the pacers confidently on a track with some early life, provided a firm foundation for their team.

Sinclair trapped Patel (11) as he played back to a quicker one in the 10th over with the score on 39-1.

Kushal Ganji joined Sharma and again demonstrated an on-side bias as he used his feet and sweetly on-drove Sinclair for four before clipping him neatly off his legs to the square-leg boundary next ball, to post the 50 in the 12th over as the partnership flourished.

A couple of goats wandered onto the field but showed no interest in the cricket before Joel Seetaram trapped Ganji (10) in front at 55-2 before Ali exploited Sharma’s penchant for the on-drive when the right-hander, who made 20, hit a catch to short mid-wicket without addition to the score.

In a Village which produced seven of the 17 Test Cricketers from Berbice, including the legendary Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher and Alvin Kallicharran, a handful of spectators, watched as Neil Targare (7) was run out at 62-4 as the lads from Guyana’s second largest County tightened the screws on the North Americans as the sun returned in all its glory.

Narine got going with consecutive boundaries off Ali, but Jash Patel (1) was caught behind off Ali, who also removed Chetram Persaud (7) in quick succession as the USA team slipped to 82-6.

The left-handed Narine tucked into the bowlers with increasing relish and played shots all round the ground. Two thumping pulls off Josha Harrichand off successive balls, reached the mid-wicket boundary like shots from a gun.

Narine found an able aid in Polisetty, who also grew in confidence the longer he batted and the pair put together 62 for the seventh wicket before Narine was taken at backward square off Samaroo who also sent back Polisetty (33) before he polished off the tail with his crafty off-spin.

When Berbice, without West Indies U-19 batsman Shemron Hetymer, began their reply, Jackman, watched by his grandfather, former Guyana wicket-Keeper and Ex Corriverton Mayor Sidney Jackman got rid of Adrian Sukhwa for a duck with nine runs on the board.

Umroa, who hit two fours in a fighting 21, offered resistance before he was removed by Patel at 42-3 and the Berbice colts never recovered as the visitors kept shackles on the batsmen with a succession of maidens although Seetram clobbered a cameo 47-ball 40 with three fours towards the end in a losing cause.

Meanwhile, at Enmore in a game reduced to 35 overs, the USA under-15s followed up their victory over West Demerara at Wales on Sunday, with an 18-run victory  yesterday. The USA U-15s made 149 all out with Sanjay Stanley (31) and Daoud Mohamed (26) being the principle scorers.

East Coast U-15 replied with 131 all out with Sautosh Reddy, who picked up the first three wickets, and Humza Khan, picking up three wickets each.

The under-13 encounter between the USA and GCC teams which was set for Bourda was washed out.

Today is a rest day while the competition continues tomorrow with the USA U-18s playing the National U-17 team at Providence, their U-15s facing the Berbice U-15s at Everest and the USA U-13s opposing GYO U-13s at GYO.

USACA Coach Ricardo Powell, the 36-year-old who two Tests and 109 ODIs for the West Indies between 1999 and 2005, said he felt this tour to Guyana would benefit his youngsters tremendously, adding that more such tours are needed if USA cricket is to improve.

The right hander, who played for his native Jamaica and also Trinidad & Tobago where he lived before migrating to the USA, said that if there were proper cricketing facilities like those for Basketball and Baseball in the ‘States’ and if the youths could have practiced their craft at three day per week the overall standard of cricket in the US would be much higher than it is at present.

The Jamaican said his team is eagerly looking forward to playing at the Guyana National Stadium tomorrow.

Georgetown, Guyana - A hostile spell of fast bowling by veteran pacer Sherain Murray and an explosive fifty by former national Under 19 all-rounder Khemraj Mahadeo propelled Rose Hall Town Bakewell ‘A’ to a crushing 10 wickets victory over arch-rivals Port Mourant in the opening rounds of the BCB New Building Society 40 overs Second Division Tournament.

Playing at the Area ‘H’ Ground, RHT Bakewell made light work of the visitors with Murray claiming 5 wickets for 27 off 7.2 overs, while Mahadeo made 62 not out from 46 balls.

Seenarine 00 cheaply.

YogindraSeenarine and S. Kistasammy then added 45 for the 5th wicket in 15 overs before West Indies female pacer Erva Giddings trapped Kistasammy LBW for 3.  No one else offered resistance to the experienced RHT Bakewell bowling attack.  Harrinarine top scored with a composed 44 which included five boundaries and a six.  He was last out as Port Mourant were dismissed for 102 off 25.2 overs.  Giddings supported Murray with 3 for 30 off eight overs while Denzil Sinclair had 1 for 15 from four overs.  Extras supported the PMCC score with a healthy 23.

Georgetown, Guyana - Captained by former Guyana and West Indies skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan, hosts Meten-Meer-Zorg West/Barakat XI pipped Young Warriors of Berbice by one wicket with one ball to spare in an exciting fundraising T20 match on Sunday last.

Meten-Meer-Zorg West/Barakat XI won the toss and chose to field, and quickly had the visitors in early trouble when opener Wahied Edwards was caught off Sheldon Alexander for four in the first over. The Warriors struggled throughout the Powerplay and at the end of the six overs, they were 36-3.

Joemal LaFleur and Kevin Ramdeen put on 25 for the fifth wicket, with Ramdeen topscoring with a polished 41 (2x6s, 2x4s). He was well-supported by LaFleur, who scored 30, with five fours. Shawn Pereira scored 13 as the Warriors were all out for 123 in 19.5 overs.

Bowling for the hosts, Trevor Benn was the pick of the bowlers with 4-26 and Alexander supported with 3-19. Sarwan also bowled three overs of testing leg-spin, conceding 13 runs.

In reply, Sarwan fell for two early in the innings, bowled by a delivery that kept low from LaFleur. Ricardo Adams lasted just three balls for his nine, which included a six, before Kemol Savory and Kevon Boodie put on 39 runs for the third wicket.

Boodie was bowled by the lively Niall Smith for 35, which included four fours, as Barakat XI later slipped to 78-6, but the level-headed Savory batted brilliantly for his 50 not out (3x6s, 3x4s) to see his team to victory.

Savory copped the Man-of-the-Match and the Best Batsman trophies, while Benn was awarded the Best Bowler prize. Meten-Meer-Zorg West/Barakat XI collected $50,000 and the Odyssey Transport trophy, while Young Warriors had to settle for the runner-up prize of $15,000 and the Barakat Brothers trophy.
